Cole Goes Back To Texas To Visit Belle

in #history5 years ago

Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!

In my series on one of the last great Old West outlaws, Cole Younger, we left off yesterday with the heat increasing on the Boys in the form of Pinkerton detectives. But today I wanted to go back to Belle's story and catch up with her.

From all accounts of Cole's friends who rode with him he talked alot about going back to her and settling down on a farm and how he missed her and little Pearl, their daughter.

It was not an easy trip to make for him because there were probably hundreds of United States Marshalls, County Sheriffs and deputy sheriffs on the lookout for members of the James/Younger gang, not to mention the Pinkertons who seemed to be everywhere.

One of the clever ways that Cole used to travel longer distances was by covered wagon with him dressed like a homesteader. No one expected an outlaw to be traveling by covered wagon and in disguise he looked nothing like a bank robber. He may have used that method to get to Texas to see Belle and Pearl.

This was a great way to travel because it provided a place to sleep in bad weather:

The shock of his life

When Cole arrived at the house of Belle's parents she came out to greet him but not in a very happy manor, she was quite hesitant and when he asked if she wasn't happy to see him she told him she was married.

This photo is close to what she looked like at that time although it was taken, I believe, a couple years earlier on one of the trips into Dallas with Cole.

MARRIED!? What the??? It had never occurred to him that after being gone for over a year with no word from him that Belle had gotten tired of waiting. She didn't even know if he was alive or not and other kids were starting to call little Pearl names because she had no father.

When Cole asked who it was he didn't like what he heard. It was Jim Reed, another Missouri outlaw that Cole didn't really like. Jim had ridden up one day and wanted to court her and she was desperate and lonely so they got hitched on horseback, wasn't even a real wedding but that didn't matter, she was still married to someone else.

Here's photo of Jim Reed, I guess he was a real jerk. While Cole was kind and respectfull to her Jim was crude and mean. He looks like a real piece of work don't he? Besides, look at that little mustache!

Belle brought out little Pearl for Cole to see but she wanted nothing to do with him and wouldn't let him near her, she was three years old by now. Well, at this point in the awkward visit there wasn't much more to be said so Cole wished her a good life, got on his horse and rode off, not knowing what to do.

Cole heads back to Missouri

He had spent the last 2 years dreaming of coming back to Belle and starting a new life together. He even thought of settling somewhere in Missouri and farming there.

Boy, I gotta tell ya...he was not thinking straight. The only chance he had to be with Belle at that time was to make an escape to South America like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid had done. Or Europe.

The Boys had robbed so many banks by that time the Pinkertons, Feds and detectives would never have stopped looking for them.

The next post continues with Belle's life and the surprising turn it takes.

Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

Well janton, this is what happens when Cole does not write or FaceTime isn't it? haha

exactly! lol.

Well losing the girl usually makes people meaner than a snake or dumb enough to mess up. The man could use a nice Sam Elliott mustache. Lol

haha! howdy sir coinsandchains! where you been? You're right about losing the girl. Sam Elliott has a classic Western mustache!

Been busy, and sidetracked. All kinds of crazy going on around here. Not getting enough work done and having to run all over the place. My daughter crashed her car (everbody's Ok), so she was driving my car then has a blow out at 11 last night... I could go on for an hour or so about stuff for the past 2 weeks... It's like every minute is filled with something that's trying to keep me from working. I decided to catch up on a little steem while I'm waiting at the tire shop.

oh man! well hopefully this time of turmoil with be over and you can get back to work! wow, no wonder I haven't seen you around much.

lol, I've been around, just lurking in the corners and not able to concentrate and post/comment much. Just jumping on and replying when I can.

Started helping run a comment contest for the GHSC group.

Are there any stats that you would like to see from the blockchain data? I have a SQL subscription now and I trying to come up with some killer stats to submit to Utopian to see if I can get a few of their awesome upvotes.

sir coinsandchains! you're working with the Homesteading group? very cool. Stats? well I keep hearing that the active users went from 60,000 down to about 12,000 after the hardfork so it would be interesting to know how many active users there actually are, is something like that a fact that can be found?

Hey this is Halloween, did you guys do anything?

You can get close, by selecting how many accounts have posted or voted in a date range, but there are so many bot, community, and alt accounts it is very hard to get an exact number. paulag does a pretty good post on that I think, and also new users that are coming in. Many of the new ones are coming in through some of the other apps like steemmonsters, busy, steemhunt etc.

Iol, I went to church, my wife was working late, one daughter was working, the other daughter went trick or treating with the grandbabies to make sure they had fun since their mom and dad are sticks in the mud....

haha! sticks in the mud! yeah ya old grinches...where does your wife work if you can say on here?

oh cool, yeah I'll take care of that this very night, thank you!

That Belle didn't knew how to choose man! Look at that man mustache! How dare she?!

Howdy blacklux! I know she didn't but in her defense she was a woman. lol. you know, a single, desperate woman with a kid and she was lonely.

Well howdy there heyimsnuffles! ya know what I've seen you around and remember because of your username being so unusual but I don't think we've ever "spoken" so it's nice to see you here.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting!
Oh, I see you know alot about cryptos, do you think Steem is going to be one that survives long term?

Traveling as a homesteader was brilliant. Hiding in plain sight. Love that! Well, apparently he wasn't as wise as he was clever. Leaving your woman neglected for that long has a price and he paid it.

ha! poor Cole was a great bank robber but the poor guy knew nothing about women! that's a line I'm using in a post.

she maybe did get married to stop the child from getting bullied , likely as you said she was lonely , but there must of been someone better and why didn't Cole have a stand off with guy

winchestergirl! well there were alot of people better for her than Cole but the guy she married was worse than Cole, he was a mean, cruel, dirtbag.

He didn't have a stand off with the guy because she had already married him and what was he supposed to do about it? He was a type of gentleman after all. Belle had made her choice so I'm sure he felt hurt and rejected.

well I say that is very gentlemanly of him x

yes Ma'am it really was indeed. In some ways he was a great guy.

I love Texas

well howdy there wales! that's a nice thing to say and I agree but what prompted you to say it? Have you been here on your tavels?

Not yet but I hope to one day

Well, I didn't see that coming! I was as surprised as Cole was! Tip!

haha! hey thank you! well the poor guy didn't know a thing about women. lol. He had zero experience with them and he just showed how clueless he was!

That's very true, isn't it? Do you suppose he was faithful to her all the time?

yes Ma'am she was the only woman he ever had anything to do with, he was so busy fighting, running or robbing that he didn't have any women in his life. Well, up to this point anyway, I don't know if he did later.
tomorrow you're really going to be surprised.. again.

I've told you how my grandfather's ancestors were all down in southern Missouri. One of the Great great uncles married a woman by the name of Molly James. Common enough name I'm sure but because of the location I've always kind of wondered if there was a connection.

there probably was some kind of connection, I bet there was. Did she have criminal like tendencies? lol.

I've never seen a photo but maybe that's where the family tendency to have Shifty eyes came from. Haha!

haha! they have a legitimate excuse!
