Headline: Nigerian woman kicked off United flight after white man complained she was ‘pungent,’ suit says

From Jeff Bezos' Operation Mockingbird Washington Post:

An African woman and her children were kicked off a United Airlines flight after a fellow passenger complained that she had a “pungent” odor, according to a racial discrimination lawsuit filed against the company.
The incident involving the passenger, a white male, happened two years ago, when Queen Obioma, a Nigerian citizen, and her two children were boarding a flight from Houston to San Francisco. The family had flown from Lagos, Nigeria, and were on the second leg of a three-flight journey to Ontario, Canada.

Let's get this right, the company is racist because the person who complained about this woman's pungent odor was white.

Obioma saw that the other passenger had sat in her assigned seat in the business-class cabin, according to the lawsuit, which was filed Friday in federal court in Houston. The passenger refused to move, so a flight crew member, instead, asked Obioma to sit elsewhere in business class.
Later, before takeoff, Obioma went to use the bathroom. On her way back to her seat, the same passenger was standing in the aisle and blocking her from getting to her seat, the lawsuit says. She said “excuse me” three times, but was ignored. After several minutes, Obioma managed to squeeze her way to her seat.
But just after she sat down, a crew member told Obioma to go outside the aircraft, where another employee told her that she will be removed from the flight. The lawsuit says the pilot had personally requested that she be removed because the male passenger, who was not identified, had complained that her smell was “pungent,” and he was not comfortable flying with her.
“At that point Ms. Obioma was lost, confused and disoriented. Her mind went blank and she was utterly befuddled,” according to the complaint.

The problem here is that they reiterate her complaint as if somehow those are the proven facts here and not just one sides claims. Not to say that she wasn't befuddled, I believe that. Somehow she concluded that people who are offended by her pungent odor are racist.

Obioma explained that she was taking her children to school in Canada for the first time, and that they had appointments they could not miss. Despite her situation, crew members refused to let Obioma back onto the aircraft and removed the entire family from the flight.

This is always my favorite part of taking people off an airplane, the part where they start virtue signaling in vain.

“Ms. Obioma watched her minor children marched out of the aircraft like criminals, confused and perplexed … She sobbed uncontrollably for a long time,” the complaint says, adding that the children, who were seated in the economy cabin, were humiliated.

Like criminals? did the police take them off in cuffs? How will those kids feel when their classmates laugh at them after they read this Washington post article about how their mother was too pungent to fly?

United Airlines’s media office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday. In a statement to the Houston Chronicle, a spokesman said the company has not been served with the lawsuit and is unable to comment because of the pending litigation.
The lawsuit alleges that United Airlines discriminated against Obioma and her children during the incident on March 4, 2016 at George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston because they were black. It also accuses crew members of singling out Obioma, not because she was being disruptive, but because a white man — who refused to sit in his own assigned seat — did not want to share a plane with her.

And yet she was removed because she stank, not because she was black. Not all black people eat Nigerian food, that shit smells wild. If you eat it, you will smell wild.

I once had a 3am airport shuttle and some people who had apparently been eating Indian food and smoking cigarettes all night got on the van. Despite it being subzero at the time we opened the windows, I put some mint chapstick on my upper lip, like they do in the morgue. But to no avail, my wife ended up having the van pull over so she could puke. Was that racist? She is white so it must be right?

The mother and her children waited for five hours before they could get on another flight and missed their scheduled appointments. Obioma also incurred more expenses, the lawsuit says.
The lawsuit is just the latest black eye for United when it comes to customer service issues.

Pun intended? Wait a minute, there isn't anyone who appreciated removing the stench from the plane? I have to give United kudos for taking the comfort of its passengers into account. They should really expand this no stink policy.

In April 2017, a viral video showed Chicago airport security officers forcibly dragging a passenger from a flight. The removal of David Dao, who was seen with a bloodied mouth in the video, resulted in the firing of two airport security officers and suspension of two others. Dao reached an undisclosed settlement with United a few weeks after the incident, according to the Associated Press. Last month, one of the fired security officers, James Long, sued United and the city of Chicago, claiming he wasn’t properly trained to deal with the situation and that he had been defamed, CBS reported.
Then in July, a passenger had to hold her 2-year-old son in her lap for four hours because the airline had sold his seat to a standby passenger.
And in March, a passenger’s 10-month-old puppy suffocated to death after a flight attendant forced the owner to place it in an overhead compartment.

yeah, and they have 4600 flights a day, shit happens. They stopped claiming to be the friendly skies a while ago.

So what do you think, if a white man smells an odor is it racist?

Sort:

Sounds to me like both parties were in the wrong. It's impossible to take the moral high ground after you've already stepped down off it. The guy had a legitimate complaint, but once he blocked the lady from returning to her seat, his offence became greater than hers.

I don't know if I buy that part, if he actually did that then he would be the one tossed off the plane. Either way its not the passengers who decide who is tossed off.

Yeah, it's very hard to get an objective viewpoint in a story like this. You need video.

sometimes that makes it worse, they manipulate the narrative by showing only certain parts.

anything a white man does is racist.
they should have separate facilities. and services.
that way they won't offend the other races.

Only whites can be racist :) And they apparently are racist for everything! :D

That seems to be the cornerstone of their case.

Some People Actually Do Smell Really Really Bad. My First Experience with this-That I remember- was back in Highschool I was riding the Public Train- The EL home from school. This was in Chicago. I plopped myself down on the nearest empty seat- as soon as I got on the train. Then I Noticed it- a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE SMELL. It was a sickening Heavy Fumes of NEGRO and Unwashed- Mixed with Something Else- I hate to say it- but the Honest Truth is what they call FISH. I looked up & acually noticed my surroundings.... I was across from what appeared to be- a Homeless woman. A very very heavy, black homeless women in a DRESS----

ALL THE SEATS on that part of the Train were EMPTY- I looked around- as I could barely breath- All the rest pf the People were on the Train- were over on the Other SIDE......

I got up- & instead of moving seats I got off the Train at the very next stop.

That was to this day- The Most Horrible Thing I Have ever smelled.

I was traumatized by body odor at the Modesto public library one time. I had no computer so I had to use one at the library and they have a system where they assign terminals and you only get like an hour at a time. I got assigned a terminal next to a homeless guy, he smelled worse than anything I have smelled but I had to sit there to use the computer. I was sick the rest of the day, I was so nauseous I could not eat that night. He smelled worse than behind a Vietnamese restaurant which is the second worst smell I have smelled. Worse than a dead mouse. Lucky for me he was a white guy or else I would be racist right?

to preface this, I was not there and we have only part of the story but if this is an accurate retelling of the story the discrimination suit is justified

the "white guy" was in a seat not assigned to him (this alone is enough reason to be removed from a flight if you refuse to move)
then he was blocking an aisle and ignoring this lady asking to get by which is very rude

like I said it's an if and it's a big if, but if the retelling of the situation is accurate it was discriminatory to remove her rather then him.

what has it got to do with race?

are you legit confused about that?
you do understand, I would hope, that if you only permit discrimination to be if the perpetrator is a slavering racist screaming racial slurs you will not get anywhere right? I mean you have to look at evidence not just hope someone comes in and confesses.....

anyway even if it isn't racial it is wrong and must be challenged. (again assuming the statements as put forth are true)

Stink is not a race. The only reason racism is alleged here is because the guy complaining was white, the only real racists are those making the claims of discrimination on that basis.

you simply are wrong
no matter how hard you strawman the fact remains it isn't JUST about him saying she stank. HE was in HER seat and refused to give it up when the crew asked him to, THAT alone is reason enough to be ejected from a flight. and yet he wasn't, she was

you seem to not have read the article

I read the part where only her lawyer says that happened and no one confirms her story. If that really happened then he would have been ejected, anyhow what has it got to do with race?
Essentially they are premising their case on an argument that black people smell because they are black and if you complain about someone stinking who happens to be black and you are white then that is racist. The only people who have demonstrated actual racism here are the complainants.

nope.
you can't use the argument that because we don't have the full story the part we have is obviously untrue. that is simply what you WANT to be the case.
the fact is you have already made up your mind about a situation you were not there for and the reasoning of people you do not know....that simply isn't possible.
see what happens if it goes to court and people have to testify under oath. or better yet see what happens when the airline settles out of court.....

when the airline settles out of court we will never find out the actual facts of the case, them settling out of court is not an admission of guilt. I have only the story to go on, what evidence besides the white guy being white and the black woman being black is there of any racial discrimination here?

Not everything involving black and white people is racist. People can also just stink, black or white for that matter. The problem in this world is that each person that is somehow different and feels scoffed, cries rasicm. And that has to stop, immediately. Humans need to unite, no matter what social status they have, no matter what belief, colour or where they are born. We need to unite, only then we can fix the many problems in the world. And even though i believe you mean well, Articles like yours are not really helping here. You are now a tool of the ruling class, and you help them to divide. Peace

you are going to have to expand on your theory about "You are now a tool of the ruling class, and you help them to divide."

how's that?

How i look at things, everything that helps to divide the people of the world, and with that i mean religion, colour, racism, wealth, sexual orientation etc, are tools and instruments of the ruling class to opress the people. And don’t get me wrong bobby, racism does exist (and not only white people are racist imo) but it is such a petty way of thinking. Because we are all universal souls

sure, what about my comments exactly do you feel was doing that?
