Entertainers Should Shut Up About Politics While They Are Working

in #news5 years ago

Hollywood hypocrisy displayed by famous actors when it comes to politics is laughable when you really think about it.

For example, celebrities who advocate for gun control or even getting rid of guns altogether while surrounding themselves with armed security guards as they get out of their chauffeured limos and live behind guarded gates in their mansions makes it clear they live a different life than what they advocate for the rest of us.

All the people who are protecting them so fans can't storm the stage or get into their homes and venues where they perform are all armed guards. It's hypocrisy at its finest.

What it comes down to is what Donald Trump talked about on the campaign, there are these pockets in our society, New York and Los Angeles, that really don't get that there's a lot of country in between.

Most Americans don't have personal assistants doing everything for them and real life is happening for most citizens that an insulated actor doesn't have to deal with, and while we value their talents they just don't get it. They are really far from reality at this moment in time and I'm hoping that we can help them come back down to earth.

Dolly Parton has one of the most intelligent responses when the media continually presses her for her views on politics that more actors and entertainers would be wise to follow. Her response is;

“I learned a long time ago, keep your damn mouth shut if you want to stay in show business. … I’m not in politics, I’m an entertainer.” - Dolly Parton

Thank you, Dolly Parton.

Michelle Malkin, who did a report on the hypocrisy of Hollywood political advocates, noted about the differences in how Hollywood thinks about gun control stated that their operative slogan is "armed security for we but not for thee". Five hundred law enforcement officers from the local LAPD as well as FBI agents were armed to the teeth.

Can you imagine if every American school was as protected as the Oscars event? The Hollywood elite strut around in their stilettos and orange pins virtue signaling about gun control while not only are they protected by all of these armed security guards, but a lot of them travel with armed security, living in gated communities behind tall walls while they lecture the rest of us as racist, nativist people who sanctimoniously advocate for the slaughter of innocent people because we disagree with them and defend our own Second Amendment rights.

I think this is why we will see, at the end of the day, the number of Americans who are tuning out these hypocritical liberals is larger than it's ever been.

Then you have people like Jimmy Kimmel who plays both sides of the aisle. On the one hand, he's like, I'm just a late night comedian. Don't mind me. And then, on the other hand, seizing every opportunity to falsely claim some sort of absolute moral authority getting his talking points from Chuck Schummer on everything from gun control to immigration.

Why can't these people just entertain without thinking of themselves as unelected politicians in this country? If anyone was at work talking about their political views all the time they would be fired.

Entertainers have actually come to believe that we care what they think, but they are wrong. It's offensive that they confuse our admiration for blind faith just because we don't think or vote the way they want you to. That is crossing a line and losing touch with reality.

Losing touch with reality is what the movie business is all about but these are real people we're talking about in the real world.

What is really tremendous is the level of narcissism needed to say something like, if you don't do what I want I'm going to move out of the country. People who have threatened to move out of the US if Trump was elected, for example, include Amy Schumer, Rosie O'Donnell, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Cher, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus, Rev. Al Sharpton, Ne-Yo, Bryan Cranston, Chelsea Handler, Michelle Branch, Lena Dunham, Samuel L. Jackson, Jon Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Omari Hardwick, Jenny Slate, George Lopez, Armie Hammer, Amber Rose, Keegan-Michael Key, Neve Campbell, Raven-Symoné, Spike Lee, Stephen King, Chloë Sevigny, Zosia Mamet, Elisabeth Moss, Natasha Lyonne, Sienna Miller, Whoopi Goldberg, Barry Diller, Kathryn Hahn, Eddie Griffin, Jurnee Smollett-Bell.

Why would we care where celebrities live? I have no idea where they live currently. For all I know, they're all living abroad anyway because I'm not invited into their homes. So, just go already and shut up about it.

This is what celebrities don't understand. That kind of a threat just displays the high level of narcissism they have and it's a little insane.

When we go to the movies we want escapism. That's why we go to the movies. When I watch the Academy Awards I want to see the movies and awards for the craft of making those movies, not some grandstanding actor spouting their political beliefs. I don't care who you voted for and don't need you bad mouth our leaders. When I want to watch politics I watch CSPAN. Why do I have to listen to actors talking politics? It sucks and needs to stop.

That said, what they do on their personal time as a citizen is their own business, but they should stop using their entertainment platforms to advocate for political policies, especially for policies they don't even follow themselves and politicians should stop using entertainers as a tool to leverage their influence. The only exception is if they run for office themselves.

Sort:

Having guns in homes and guns with gaurds is completely different thing.
But yeah you want to keep the gun if you have the need for it and you know how to use it with precautions, like keeping it away from children etc.

Celebrities too have huge fan following and people listen to them. And probably it's good to speak openly when you don't agree with the government policies becuase they ( the politicians) are paid from the public money paying taxes.

Democracy, not Dictatorship.

Having guns in homes and guns with guards is a completely different thing

How so?

they are paid from the public money paying taxes.

are you saying entertainers are paid with taxpayers money? How do you figure that?

I mean the politicians in the house are paid from government taxes.

Gaurds are trained and certified to use guns, and it's their profession.

Right. But this post is talking about actors and entertainers advocating for political policies that they do not adhere to themselves, not politicians. So I don't understand how your comment applies to that issue.

What I understand you to be arguing is:

  1. Only certain people are qualified to give certain types of speech or public opinion.
  2. People should be limited to their domain of expertise when speaking publicly.
  3. People can only have a deep knowledge in one domain.
  4. Celebrities do not come from the communities all across the country, small towns in the middle more so than the coasts.
  5. Donald Trump wasn't a celebrity who spoke politically publicly despite having no political training or experience.

Dolly's words don't mean celebrities shouldn't talk politics. It means that talking politics is polarizing and she didn't want to divide or alienate her fans by talking politics. It's the essence of political correctness. If you can't say something that all sides can agree on, don't talk about it.

I've only just joined Steem and am not looking to piss people off or make enemies, but I don't think a person's job is a political disqualification and wanted to say something.

No, that's not what I'm saying at all. Please read the last two paragraphs of this post.

You assume I didn't.
"I don't care who you voted for and don't need you bad mouth our leaders. When I want to watch politics I watch CSPAN. Why do I have to listen to actors talking politics? It sucks and needs to stop.

A public platform should be used to advocate. People like you and I don't have voices loud enough to get ideas that we hold dear out to others. It's better that it's out in public than privately dumping cash into election funds to sway the people who make choices that affect our lives without us privy to it.

Yes, a public platform should be used for advocating, but not at the Oscars.

They should write a book if they feel that strongly about an issue or run for office. If they were addressing an audience at a political meet up it would make more sense, but at the Oscars? What does a movie industry event have to do with politics? Last thing people need is a lecture full of virtue signal actors who pretend for a living. It's a downer, not the kind of discussion for such an event, and defeats the purpose of why we're congratulating them. Plus, regardless of the issue it just makes them look bad. I wouldn't want my grocer or taxi driver or accountant to do that. People stop inviting friends to parties if they keep spouting their political views and actors should stick to what they are being paid to do at industry events and save their political views for the right time and place. Like you said, self censoring.

I think I can agree here. I haven't seen the Oscars so I don't know the full context, but it seems a bit of a lame time to be giving political speeches. If nothing else, I would think it makes for boring TV.

I generally like to stay away from politics because of how sensitive a topic it is in my country(people get killed solely because of their opinions, no joke) but whenever I see a celebrity raving about a politician or a political issue, in my mind I go "there's somebody who's getting paid from talking crap" because that's the reality. The payment may not be directly in cash but their perceived interest gives them clout and increases their followership in the political circle.

I remember watching the video of Kanye West in the White house, both him and Trump didn't say one relevant shit but it got so much coverage, in Nigeria, we have Davido supporting his fat uncle in politics, there's nothing new ever said. No numbers, statistics, no data, nothing but hogwash and sometimes random slandering of the incumbent. Celebrities should shut up

The entertainment industry and the propaganda machine are stronger than ever. It's getting totally out of control. Great post, couldn't agree with you more.

I am not a famous person. I blog about alt-health and try to help fat people get thin. I learned early in this game to self-censor as do many of my online friends in the same game.

Dolly Parton has it right. As soon as I start talking about any belief I have outside of my main point, I'm off to the races and distracted by trolls. That helps nobody get thin and healthy.

Right now I am focused on a twitter campaign to hopefully get some fresh blood into steem. The are about 100 of us out there doing this same thing.

So the focus should be

  • Steem is great, come on in!
  • Look at this great steem post earning rewards!
  • Read/write crypto news at steem and get paid!
  • Look at this person who has a niche. They are doing great on steem and you can too!

But probably 10% of the tweets I see for this project are about politics or controversy instead. The opinion of a steemer about the president or congress does not lure a crypto person or content creator into steem.

Free speech is highly overrated. Don't do it!
