A Comedy of Errors ~ Depression

in #oldlife6 years ago (edited)

Depression comes in many shapes and forms. You can not control if you get depression. The world needs to find a better way of helping people deal with depression. There are so many different kinds of depression. One kind of Therapy that will help one person will not help all people because we are all different and unique even when it comes to depression.

The 'story' below happened a very long time ago. It is a true account of a day in my life. As far as I have seen the world of Mentel Health has not progressed.

Long ago in a land far, far away

She walked into the Hospital. Asked where the counselor was to talk with. The Nurse at the front desk had no idea what the woman was talking about. The lady then explained she had talked to someone from her Insurance Company. They had told her if you needed to go talk to someone today about depression all you had to do was go to the Hospital. There was a counselor on call that she could speak with. Fair enough she thought.

The lady explained to the nurse just what had transpired and why she was now talking to her. She then was lead to a small room to talk to another nurse. Once again explaining what she had been told over the phone by her Insurance Company.

She was lead to an ER room. Her blood pressure was taken. She was asked how she was feeling while being told to lay down on the bed in the small ER hospital room. The lady then asked why she was being put in this room. She also asked when the counselor would be coming to talk to her as she had other things she needed to get done today but felt it important she talk to someone first. She was told someone would be with her shortly.

Over an hour later the lady had had enough. She grabbed her stuff, walked out of the Hospital, and drove home.

While upstairs cleaning the lady heard very loud pounding on the front door of her house, along with her name being called. She ran downstairs to open the door to two Policeman standing in front of her. They told her she needed to go back to the Hospital. She answered she wasn't going to go. She explained all that had happened that morning and why she left.

This is where she was informed as soon as she had walked into the Hospital and said she needed to talk to a counselor she had lost all her rights as a free citizen. She could either drive herself back to the hospital on her own and admit herself or they, the police, would handcuff her and take her there. Once there she would be admitted to the Mental Health Ward by the State. If she chose this route the only way out would be by going to court in a few days time if they felt she was stable enough to leave.

Given those outstanding choices, the lady drove herself to the hospital. The police following along behind her.

This time when she walked into the Hospital she was taken directly to the Mental Health Ward where she was put in a tiny room, all her personal belongings were taken away. She then told her story. How this had all came to be. How there was a huge misunderstanding by a lot of people. The person she was talking to just nodded their head having heard it all many, many, times before.

Lead to a larger room with two beds the lady was left in there and told as soon as the Doctor had the time he would come to see and talk to her. Asking how much time this would be, she was told hours and was left alone.

Left alone in a room the lady could not leave. A room with nothing to do in it but lay on a bed. The lady that was more than a bit claustrophobic sat and just breathed.

Hours went by. A young good-looking man came in the room. One that knew he was good looking. One that knew most women listened to him because of how he looked. Talking down to the lady, he suggested that while she waits to talk to the Doctor she might want to join in on the group session that was going to be starting now. She really was not being given a choice. She went.

During the group session, the lady learned a lot of things. The two main ones being she really didn't belong here at all and the guy that was the counselor, that was to be helping these people, was an idiot on a very bad power trip.

Back to her room, she went. She again asked the nurse when the Doctor was going to be coming. No more, no less than those words. She knew if she had to spend the night in this place she would be lost forever.

Another hour went by and another.

Finally, the lady was called into an office. In front of her was a Doctor. He shook her hand and asked for her story. She slowly explained her day to him. How it had all unfolded, from the phone call to the Insurance Company to her leaving the Hospital on her own, the Police coming to her house, to finally over 8 hours later talking to him.

He took one look at her when she was done. He had an angry look on his face and he said, "This is the last place you should be. This never should have happened to you. I am very sorry."

He signed the papers so the lady could go home.

Moral: Depression comes in all shapes and sizes and should not be shoved into the same square peg. You can do more harm than good in the end.

OMG...
Get outta my head!!!
This is eerily similar to a day in my life, except you need to add a scene with 110 pounds of me surrounded by cops, hands on guns. Feeling suicidal? They were ready to help!!
My punchline was a lot creepier too, being told to get back on the drugs that made me suicidal or I would never go home... So I got back on, was told upon discharge that if I ever stopped I would be ten times MORE likely to kill myself. I threw the prescription in the trash and have been trying to blow the whistle ever since. That black box warning on the antidepressants? That was not there yet... I helped get it there in my own little way. Nearly paid with my life for the effort.
HUGS!!

The world is so crazy!!! I wonder if that happens to women more than men... So sorry you had to go through that. And thank you for helping to get the warning on the meds...

Thank you, that was a very sweet thing to say! 😘
It is just a little scary how many times I tell my story and people just intellectually shut down on me, they would rather have a physical fight with me than allow me to speak ill of their beloved pill... They will not allow me to cite statistics and God forbid I mention "placebo effects."

That freaks me out too. Just the general ignorance and unwillingness to look outside of the little box they put themselves in.
Like that opiate crisis we are in. Most got to heroin and such through an addiction to prescription drugs. We know that there are better ways to deal with pain. Pot is one of them.
Even though it is legal in California, our little city doesn't want a dispensary here. Stupid!!! they are saying no to a lot of tax money they could use to make the city better and pay for youth programs.
But big pharma, liquor stores and such are at every corner. Stupid crazy!!!

We have a little drama unfolding... The big city nearest us is Ontario, OR. When OR legalized, each area that did not pass it was allowed to ban the sale in that county. Ontario had people with clinics and dispensaries rented and staffed, and the city said "Not here." Well, 30 miles down the road was a little ghost town, in another county. They let a dispensary in. The place made so much money for the little town they paid all the government expenses for the year by March. They regularly have lines around the block, even after they let a second one open. The little town is BOOMING. New restaurant just opened. People are selling their little shacks for big bucks. Meanwhile, Ontario is asking the residents to let them add sales tax... Oregon has no sales tax, but Ontario wants a city tax, because they can't meet their bills.
Front page of the Ontario paper this morning... Someone filed the paperwork to ask the voters if maybe they'd like to let the clinics and dispensaries open after all. So now that it will be pretty much "You want to pay the tax, or you want to let the marijuana users to pay the tax?" I think an epiphany may be in the making.

I think more people than we know have looked for help and had the same thing happen to them then anyone realizes. Yes, it's a nightmare beyond what anyone could ever imagine unless it has happened to you.

Thank YOU for doing and still doing what you can. People and Doctors don't realize that all meds do not affect all people the same........I could go on forever about that but......not today.....

HUGS

THANK YOU for sharing your story and I'm so happy you are here now to tell the tale. <3

I am happy to have you there to listen, and THRILLED that you chose to speak out. If enough people hold up their candle, more and more people will see.

Wooooiwwww!!! @snook. You will surely make your kids and grand kids proud when you become a father and grandfather.. As you said, depression makes one do crazy things, that he or she would never think of doing.

It's a negative omen, that should be avoided by all means and how can it be avoided. By remaining calm in the midst of challenges!!

Depression comes in many shapes and forms. You can not control if you get depression. The world needs to find a better way of helping people deal with depression. There are so many different kinds of depression. One kind of Therapy that will help one person will not help all people because we are all different and unique even when it comes to depression.

Wow @snook, I didn't know you were able to become a father, lol. But I was nodding my head in agreement with this. Is why I am learning to keep my mouth shut. Things get twisted around way too easy.

:D I'm thinking I need a new profile Photo :D but we all make mistakes. and yes, unfortunatlely they way the system is now you are 'safer' not to say too much which is sad.

Yep. Is why I left the reply I did, instead of what almost came out. :) And I think many of us like your blue haired pic. :)

This is very good! And the truth. Once you admit to having mental problems you lose all your rights. Very sad :(

Thank you hugs and yes it is very sad,

The world, in general, needs to do a better job of understanding mental issues. There is never one solution for everyone.

I agree very much with what you said.......but even on Steemit I had a friend that was told not to talk about depression because people would stop coming to read her posts..........

So why I wrote the last few posts that I did......this one being the hardest of all and got me so upset when done I didn't post it in the freewrite selfie contest so got taken out.

But in the end, this was more important to write. So many people suffer from it and so many people keep quiet..........

Thank you :D

Your moral says it the best hon! Thank God the doctor finally heard you. (I hope he handed a few people their asses.)

There's nothing funny about a group of people that took an oath to do their best to help everyone that comes to them to not even take the time to LISTEN.

Why is it so hard to get an overhaul of how mental health is diagnosed and the various methods that can be used to help people? Care and possible treatment should be based on person's unique and individual needs.

Money. it's all about money. Time is money and if you don't have gobs of it you are screwed.

everyone makes ton's of money off of people being depressed.

LISTENING is always the key <3 you are so right there!!

This is crazy sh**t and why I hate "the system". Hugs to you and I am so glad that the doctor finally came and you didn't have to spend the night.

CRAZYYYYYYYYY!!!

Have to come back for a vote tomorrow.

it was one crazy day and yes CRAZY!!

Too scary! What a crappy, abusive system ...No one should ever have to go through that. Reminded me of the 50's where anyone could sign you into one of those hell holes. HUGS! I'm so glad you shared this!!

I don't have that cool one you do so I will leave you with this one :D and see :D we are not alone. Ever! <3

This is a really powerful story! I love you and am so glad you got out of there!

Love you too!! Check your hangouts :D
