I'm no longer shooting pics on a potato - Switching from Canon 7D to the new Sony A7III

in #photofeed6 years ago

For the last 20 or more years, I've been a Canon guy. It's been my go-to and dare I say it my friend. Rain, snow, sun Canon has seen me through them all and been with me on my journey as a hobbiest photographer. But that's all about to change.

The age of my 7D was starting to show, newer younger models were starting to turn my head. Even the lowest end of the Canon SLRs had better specs. But then Sony released a camera that was too tempting to resist. The A7III. It has everything...or nearly. A beast.

In Japan, I tried the A7III in the store and fell in love. I decided not to buy it there, convincing myself that I didn't need to have it. But, when I came home I could hardly think of anything else. So I went to the local camera store and put myself on the waiting list. I told myself that by the time it arrived, I'd be over it. Apparently not.

I finally did it. Finally made the leap and switched brands.

Apparently I've been shooting on a potato for the last few years. I know that a good photographer should be able to get a good photo out of any camera, but the A7III (at least for me) is like a step into the future. Some features are even like magic. You can teach it to know a face in a crowd of faces, or just to find all the eyes in a picture and focus on that. It gives you the power to just focus on composition - rather than think of the 100s of other things.

It's an incredible upgrade for me full frame, 15 stop DR, 4K video, dual slots, and weather sealed. Strangely Sony calls it their 'basic' model. But I think it's just to fuck with Canon & Nikon.

The only complaints I have so far, are the same one listed in all the reviews. The grip is a little small (getting a leather case to fix that), the menu system is confusing a all hell, and the buttons are a little tough to get used to. I chalk most of that down to switching from another brand.

The other thing that is taking some getting used to is the digital view finder. Although it does have its benefits. You can see right in the screen how the picture is going to look and adjust accordingly. Crazy. I'm so used to having to check the screen afterwards that keeping the camera on my eye is a HUGE adjustment.

I can't wait to get out to the mountains with this thing. Until then you're stuck with my 'around the neighbourhood' shots. So far though, it's quite a leap forward.

I'd say if you're in the market for a new camera - this would be the one to get.

Oh - all the photos in this post are shot on the new camera btw.

Congrats ! That is big. I am interested in buying it aswell :)

Fantastic photos. My dad used to be a freelance photographer and we have always been a Nikon family. He has a friend in England that does professional jobs and he uses nothing but Canon. A lot of times I think those two get most of the credit and people tend to forget about some of the great up and comers that are out there. I have been really impressed with the compact Sony that I purchased a while ago. It has so many professional features for being a fixed lens model. I look forward to see more of the pictures you take with your new camera!

Me too! It's quite a game changer for me.

Nice man! I'm jealous. I stepped out of my Canon zone to buy a Sony a6300 for my video work. Canons video right out of camera is way better (colors and depth) but I'm chalking that down to me not knowing or being used to having to post process my videos much. Other than that, I've been impressed with that little camera. I would absolutely love to upgrade and get this model... But.. I guess I'll wait until steem blows up ;)

Looking forward to seeing more from your new setup!

I wanted to wait as well...but then i couldn't....

my potato is offended now :D

Mine was too. It pouted all day.

Nice Calgary shots I need a new camera too

Well, you've finally pissed me off. Sony has been turning my head for the last couple years and I've been considering letting my N grade potato lay. A friend bought a 760 Nikon and I almost lost my mind. Now you've gone to Sony? What's a poor boy to do?

Thanks for the great photos and the warning: Do not touch a new Sony.

It was a tough choice for me. I've been canon forever...but this sony is really like magic.

You broke my heart!
I am still shooting with my loyal 7D and since I gave up photography as a profession a few years ago there are no plans for upgrades, so please don’t call my dear Canon potato.

I loved my 7d - don't get me wrong. But the quality difference is insane.

I transferred from Canon to Sony as well. Great choice! The Dynamic Range is just insane and it allows you to photograph in a lot of challenging light conditions. The only thing that I miss with the Sony is the color saturation and contrast Canon seems to had with my 5D Mark II's. I wonder if you have noticed as well that the colors of your 7D are much brighter/stronger/contrasty (not sure how to call it in English).

Happy clicking with the Sony! (btw did you purchased a Metabones Speedbooster? or did you go full mental and bought new Sony Lenses as well?)

Cheers,
