Defeat

when the bell dings
its signal
to start the next round
i stay seated
in my corner of the ring
with my white towel
stained with dishonor
under my feet
as a sign of defeat
because i can’t rise
once more
i’ve been beaten
about the head
and i’m bruised
can’t see straight
and blood soaks my gloves
from the inside
where my fingers twitch
busted up and useless
a genuine reflection of me
i’ve got no more fight
no razzle dazzle
no spark of life
no momentum to carry me through
this battle that taunts and wounds
the stands are empty
my fans abandoned me
called me a lost cause and
placed bets on the other guy to win
once indestructible
never again
my injuries are too severe
to heal
