Sound Bites
see what had happened was
it wasn’t my fault
i feared for my life on this plane of existence
the victim
i mean
the suspect
because i’m the real victim
was a hulking figure
of my imagination
straight out of legend
don’t you see?
and i felt justified
in the use of excessive force
because the weapon
well
the wallet
or the phone
or the lit cigarette
was a threat to my breath and beating heart
i stood my ground
on someone else’s property
i turned away compassion and
proudly denied care
and did what the law expects of me
i can’t be sure
how many times i fired
even if the casings number
twenty-three
