The strngest golf course in Thailand?

in #sports5 years ago

I have noticed this on many other occasions while taking off an landing in Bangkok’s older airport (Don Muang.) Every time I see it I feel as though that given how protective and off limits airport property seems to be around the world that it is very bizarre that there would be a gold course in the middle of the runway area.

I have no idea who is allowed to play here but is just seem very unsafe to me. Even the most seasoned golfer will on occasion slice or hook the crap out of a shot and it flies wildly off course. I have no idea what a golf ball would do to a Rolls Royce airplane jet engine but it can’t be good. I don’t know how familiar you are with golf but golf balls are hard.

I have heard stories about certain airports that have to employ hawks because if there is too much of a bird population a bird going into a jet engine can bring down the place (or so they say, I have no idea if this is true.)

Also, I know people that get absolutely smashed while playing golf and a golf cart (buggy) would almost certainly interfere with the take-off or landing that is moving at 300 miles an hour.

Furthermore, golfers tend to want absolute silence when they are playing in order to focus intently on the shot at hand and honestly, is there any environment in the world that could possibly be noisier than the middle of an airport runway?

I wonder if the FAA would have a problem with this. It seems they might seeing as how I can’t have my tablet playing a Netflix movie without bringing down the plane in a blazing inferno - it would be even worse if my seat wasn't in the fully upright position (the horror!) It just seems incredibly strange to me that this place is here at all and what the developers were thinking when they built it.

That would be pressure golf and as much as I love plane watching I wouldn't play here. If you have played golf on a waterhole the ball always ends up in the water as much as you try not to think about it. I would hit a plane and that would be guaranteed. I was playing on a short course some years ago and I hit a sign post in front of a Ferrari. The post was about the width of the golf ball and I only hit it there as I was trying to avoid the sports car. Danger attracts my golf balls and I don't play anymore.

haha, funny follow-up. I am just stunned that no planes have been hit but then again, this is Thailand, and no one would ever know if a plane had been hit... they would quickly sweep that under the rug depending on how rich the golfer was

Here is a video of a USAF C-17's aborted takeoff after an engine blowout caused by bird ingestion. A golf ball would have similar, or maybe even worse damage, as it is more solid than avian bone and flesh.

On US Navy aircraft carriers, the crew often make searches for foreign objects, by slowly marching from bow to stern on the flight deck, looking for anything even as small as a screw or a paper clip, and making sure the deck is clean, before flight ops can commence.

The story with the birds it's true. We once had an emergency landing at Budapest because the plane hit a bird and it wasn't safe to continue the journey. Engineers had to check the plane and we lost two hours. We were told the plain is safe. I asked what about the bird but got no answer 😀
Golf courses can be especially dangerous because where there are people, there's food and where is food, there are birds.
There are international safety regulations that need to be respected but looks like this is ok, otherwise the airport wouldn't get the license. Or someone is cutting corners, bending the rules.

That is pretty funny. They would never let me on this course, I would be hitting all the jets. I can't hit the ball straight to save my life. I have heard that they can still fly with only one engine, but I still wouldn't want to be on the plane to test that theory!
