Are there any people with green thumbs in NYC?

When I first came to NYC and was walking around a little exploring I was fooled into thinking there must be so many great gardeners with green thumbs working on the gardens for so many buildings as there was always such beautiful gardens around.

I say fooled, because within a week, or so I noticed a garden could change completely overnight, and by changed I do not mean a little trimming and tidying up, I do mean completely change all the flowers being changed completely.

Then I came to realize landscaping companies must do a thriving business, as I soon come to see them come along, pull out all the existing flowers and such and replace them with a new theme. I guess also the gardeners who grow all the flowers must do a good business and love that the gardens are often replaced so often, means good business for them selling more flowers.

I must say although they often do look so beautiful, I think I prefer more natural and maintained with love rather than staged which most of these gardens are in my mind.

And you may wonder what triggered me to shar emy thoughts on this...

It was in the last couple of weeks seeing lots of these plants popping up all over the city, I have no idea what sort of plant it is, it looks like somehting in the lettuce family to me.

Most of the ones I see here are either white or this color. and they seem pretty sturdy and not bothered too much by the cold, which is why the landscapers seem to use a lot of them at this time of year.

Sort:

It does look like some sort of leafy green that you could eat. Wouldn't it be awesome if they planted more fruits and vegetables around the city. So that people just walking by could grab an apple off a tree if they wanted to. I guess you would have to keep that one person from picking them all and trying to sell them though :P

I had never thought of that but it would be so cool if they had fresh fruit growing around the city, but sadly I also think your concern would happen they would be raided in quite hours and sold to shops no doubt, or sold onthe sidewalk from right under the tree more likely

Kale! We also have them here and the landscapers get their flowers from farmers that specialize in flower production. An expensive business as everyone has to make a profit. Blessings!

Thanks for the info, someone else also said it was Kale

That looks so pretty and I really like the colors of it.
Perfect for the winter season.

Yes they are cleats hardy and add some color

Thats insane! Soooo cool @tattoodjay.

Isnt it just seems crazy to me

Howdy there JJ! Well that is very interesting, they come often and replace the whole plant just for a new new! I bet that costs a fortune!

Ohh yes no wonder everything is expensive in NYC, and I guess a sign of the times and how it has become a throw away society

wow very true sir, I mean JJ...it doesn't sound right to just rip out perfectly healthy plants and throw them away. I'm not a green freak or anything but that just doesn't sound right. I guess they have lots of money to play with!

I guess this is just one of many things that explains why everything in NYC is so expensive, I remember when I first got here and considered renting a place in NYC, the prices were crazy, plus i decided i wanted to live out of the madness that is Manhattan, mind you queens where I first lived was cheaper than Manhattan, but still not cheap

oh wow, you actually lived in the city when you first came, that had to be a culture shock if you came from New Zealand!

It was a culture shock, when I arrived in NYC for sure, but I didnt come from NZ to here I had been out of NZ for years by that time, I actually came from Rwanda to NYC, and thats even more of a culture shock LOL

lol!.. holy moly JJ! What were you doing in Rwanda?

I worked in the field for Peacekeeping for many years so I saw many interesting places shall I saw

Hello
@tattoodjay
It looks like ornamental kale to me...
I'm not from or in New York city. Kale is a very hardy plant. Tolerates the cold VERY well.
(:

I guess that could be what it is, thanks for the info

I'm not positive... @tattoodjay
It just really looks like a kind of kale to me... I'm curious myself to know. It's really pretty and colorful.
(:

I did try googling to find out what it was but I had no luck

Hello
@tattoodjay
(:
I did find this on a Google search today.

Lacy Pink Flowering Cabbage Plant

Yes that is them thanks for finding this and letting me know :)

Your most welcome @tattoodjay
You got my curiosity going in full swing... !!!! (:

Well a few others have also said it was Kale so Kale it must be :)

Spring is a time of gardening and a lot of flowers are cultivating available in nature. Nice color plant.

@annephilbrick has it exactly right! Flowering Kale. It is beautiful, hardy, and you can eat it, too! Those are particularly beautiful plants!

Thanks for the confirmation its good to know what it is :)

It is a lovely ornamental and NYC certainly has the perfect climate for it. It is beautiful here in the late fall and early winter, but I think it gets too cold here for it

I prefer the flowers and colors of the warmer months but these do fit the season so well :)

And they are better than nothing at all! There is not much that will grow and provide colorful leafy interest this time of year in the north! Spring will be here soon, or at least that's what I keep telling myself.

LOL glad it is not just me telling myself that spring will be here soon LOL

It is 7° out there right now. But at least that is 7 degrees above zero, not below!

At the moment we have to take any rise in temperature but thats still cold stay safe and warm

Great post!
When I lived downtown I would see people gardening all spring and summer by NYU.
It’s pleasant to see it mixed in the concrete jungle.

Thanks and yes your right that reminds me I have seen some community gardens in the city I must visit one or more of those come spring
