Why I'm joining Narrative Network (Steemit competitor)

in #narrative6 years ago

For all you who don't know Narrative Network is an upcoming Steemit competitor. It's in alpha right now and beta is coming in the fall. It will have communities from the start and their alpha is basically about setting up it's community system from the get-go. It's built upon the NEO blockchain, and NEO is one of those coins that I see sticking around.

There are things I like about Narrative and things I don't like. There are things I love about steemit and things that I really do not. There are also many things about both platforms that are more complicated than like/dislike.

I personally prefer as few rules as possible and love having the freedom to remain anonymous. But there are still many people who do not respect others, do not respect community and who want to dominate an ecosystem. As long as there are people who seek to dominate an ecosystem, you are going to have to find ways to deter them from doing so. In some ways steemit has done a great job, and in others, not so much.

If steemit wanted to avoid forcing KYC and strict rules about multiple accounts on everyone, they could have used their share of steem to actively empower original content creators and community facilitators, and start out with a strong community of whales who wanted to share the wealth. While there may have been some of that, it's apparent to me that not enough was done, if there was ever any real intention of prioritizing community in the first place. There are many who simply see steem as an investment, and the system has always favored them. Perhaps it will be no different at other platforms, but it's worth a look.

I've been over getting angry and debating it for a while, but I'm ready to see how someone else does it. Don't get me wrong, I love the friends I made here and I still think there are valuable discussions being had and great relationships being built here. I am not quitting steemit. But in the end, these is all a big experiment and it will be nice to see how another platform learns from our mistakes.

What I hope is that some competition will force the steemit team and steems largest shareholders to get serious about keeping many of the great content creators who have joined the platform. It's a shame that so many of them have left and I would hope that this is an equal concern to the community as the price of steem, because it will determine the true long term potential of the platform.

I hope to continue to build a community that goes beyond one social media network and can reach all of them. If you would like to connect outside of steemit (facebook, twitter, narrative, patreon) let me know.

Narrative is now doing a referell program for alpha. If you'd like to join me over there and get started posting when beta comes out in the Fall, please click the link below and let's build a nice little corner of Narrative the same way we've built a nice little corner of Steemit.

It's good to hear about all the potential competition that is springing up for STEEM. My hope is that it will only make this space stronger and more competitive, so that many more will come to the blockchain and leave the other kinds of social and blogging sites behind.

I'm here on STEEM because it's up and running and at least somewhat fulfilling it's stated purpose. However, as these other sites/blockchains come along, I think it behooves all of us to be checking them out and seeing how they roll out, form, etc. Someone is bound to get it right from the beginning, and they will be the one with the best chance of winning the space.

Those are my thoughts exactly, it would be nice if Steem and narrative could both grow out of those who are tired of the social media giants.

What I like about Narrative is that they seem eager to improve upon what steemit has built. Their model is less revolutionary to me, but even if many of us are ready for the level of freedom steemit provides, there are still those who are not and have drained on the ecosystem to a large degree

Well, the idea of know your customer that you bring up seems to me to be something you'd want to do to some degree. I don't think you want to potentially harbor malcontents. That sounds dangerous and unnecessary. I don't know how you do it and maintain a level of anonymity, but even in the creation of alt accounts, it would be great if they all had to tie back to one identity, whatever that was. It wouldn't have to be a name, SSN or phone number, but something that would identify you as the owner.

Anyway, there needs to be some level of decorum. I'm glad there's freedom and decentralization. I think the means at our disposal to police ourselves still leaves a little to be desired.

So are you on at the moment or waiting to get on?

I’m on but the only thing to do now is to refer and vote on community names. I think we’ll be able to post in September or October. I plan on posting some deadposts over there!

I got completely thrown by the blog being on Medium and I'm not sure what the "community" thing is running on XD Took me a while to figure out how to get onto the thing itself to have a poke around. I'm hopping on just to see how things run I guess, I'm currently a bit wary as it appears to be proprietary and centralised.

How is medium? Ive been thinking of doing it forever but still haven’t gotten around to it. Is there a community?

I just noticed their blog was on Medium, I haven't done it before either.

You should join us too @ryivhnn :>)

I jumped into the queue to have a looksee. I've become unreasonably wary about social networks that aren't decentralised now though XD

I get it but - who knows - this one might be fun. Especially if all the nice peepz from Steemit / beawesome and their creative friends jump on the train ;>)

Thanks for sharing this interesting info. Joined narrative through your link. All the blockchain platforms, including steem, are in infancy and nobody knows who is going to be the winner or be there in couple of years. No point in putting all the eggs in one basket. Care to share your facebook group page link?

Thanks for using my link :-) I hope we have two or three new platform soon to replace the old ones.

i've joined the list, we'll see how it goes, thanks for info! (resteemed).

Thanks! I’ll see you over there when beta drops!

I might check the place out. If nothing else it can be a place to let some old under valued posts a second chance or to put up content that doesn't fit on my page here. Plus, showing up on day one seemed to pay off for some of the people here.

Edit: Just signed up. I guess it is waiting game until the round ends.

Thanks for the info. Where did you find out about them?

I really like the looks and feel of Narrative so far and that after just having received the email that I'm on the waiting list, haha. Even the name appeals to me.

My filmmaking buddy Ted also subscribed today. It might become a fun place to hang out. Time will tell.

Boa noite!

I’ve been following neo closely and this is a neo based platform. They lack someone as crafty as Larimer, but now Steem does too so who knows. The team is really hands on though, it’s easy to get in touch with the ceo and see people listen to your ideas. I just hope they have the tech all figured out as well as Steem, but hopefully they can take what works and leave what doesn’t.

Glad to hear that
Communication for me has always been the most important thing. We are people after all, not robots. No matter what some conspiracy theories might tell you ;>)

Let's see where this voyage takes us

Hmm interesting. I feel steemit has a big advantage because it has dtube but as you said it has some big problems too. I have checked out some other platforms. ono which is so slow its unuasable . mithrill pretty nice but more focused on china. And trybe which i really like as its more about blockchain.

Dtube is getting less and less popular as they appear to delete ( older ) videos without notifying their users. I learnt about it, yesterday, by coincidence. I did not even no ONO had started. I never received an invite, even though I subscribed. Never heard of mithrill or trybe but thanks for the info!

Hey, @vincentnijman.

Trybe is just barely getting started, and will be running on the EOS platform from what I've read. All of these platforms are still in production/alpha/early beta stages and will take time to catch up. They will all need community to do so, and they will have to be better from the beginning to get enough people there. I think it's all great information, and at some point, I may be playing on all kinds of platforms until I can settle on one or two. :)

That's not cool regarding Dtube. Seems like they keep going downhill. Dlive seems to be doing a better job, even if they're more of a streaming platform to begin with.

They will all need community to do so, and they will have to be better from the beginning to get enough people there

True that and I agree with you that, from a personal perspective, especially if you aim to make money a living on writing, it's always clever to bet on more than one horse.

I, personally, don't see myself writing for and posting on a handful of different platforms, but I'm flexible enough to try my hand on two or three of them or leave one ( Steemit? ) behind if it isn't doing the trick anymore

Have a nice day!

Hey, @vincentnijman. I'm in agreement on betting on more than one horse. It's just getting the horse up and running. I can see myself working more than one platform as soon as they exist and are more or less to the same stage that Steemit was when I started. There's been quite a few apps come online since I've started, too. So, with the Hard Fork coming next month and the other things still in the works, who knows what STEEM looks like before the end of the year.

to be honest i still use youtube the most haha steemit has more dapps thats what i was really saying. yeah same i never got my ono code as well. you can sign up but you need an invite code from some one else my code is KNKM fell free to use it. ono atm is so slow its almost unusable tho

That is interesting information @cryptoslicex.

Have you tried Minds. That's another one I hear people talking about a lot? 😊

nar not yet havent heard of it. seems to be alot of new social media projects good competition for steemit

Very true, dtube has been a huge part of steemits success, especially with all the demonetization happening at youtube. Ono seems ok but I think they are going to run into some awkward situations with regulation as soon as they get some momentum. Mithril is just not my thing, I’m into writing and sharing ideas, sometimes visual arts and music, not too into short video clips or even vlogging. Didn’t know about trybe

I don't think I have the capacity to use more than one platform @whatamidoing. I just don't have the time. Or motivation come to that.

From what I've read elsewhere it seems that Steemit was pretty much a taste case for the blockchain and there was never much desire to promote community here by the developers.

I'm hoping that the Steem I've earned will become more valuable as it gets scarcer and SMTs come on board.

From the little I know, it sounds like the blockchain itself is solid so that, I feel, is where my investment will pay off.

If it doesn't it doesn't and I won't have lost much.

I'm trying to step back a bit from it all but I find that's hard to do knowing that I have a few automatic upvotes every time I post. 😁

I'm making the most of the beautiful weather though and going to the beach again today to swim and relax for a couple of hours with a book.

I hope you have a lovely day too. 😍

I totally understand. I am also not ready to jump all into another platform, I am just testing the waters a little bit for now. If I find the community to be more positive over there I may try to balance both though.

Just do whatever feels good at the moment, some weeks I step back, others I’m all in!

some weeks I step back, others I’m all in

Yeah. I've noticed that @whatamidoing. 😂

I haven't cracked that one yet. It still can feel a bit compulsive at times. I have been taking plenty of time out though but certainly not whole days at a time. 😁
