Toaster Sweater Mania

No, these three words in the title are not random. They have a deeper meaning. They proof that I can sew a sweater that I can sew a sweater in three attempts that Sew House Seven makes wonderful patterns. Wow, I got the sentence finished, this was tough 😅

As always, my first passage is a bit cryptic, but the riddle will be solved. During the last week I learned to sew a sweater, namely the Toaster Sweater 1. I found this lovely cropped sweater per chance on Instagram and I loved the model in it. The long cuffs and the big waistband, the turtleneck and raglan sleeves, the stiff fabric and naturally the colour pink – I was smitten. Maybe the medication lowered my inhibition (you remember, flu, fever...?) but I instantly bought this pattern. As it is a pdf pattern, it really was instantly.

I glued the 32 pages together (HATE) and had the pattern ready. By the way: here is my one and only critic of this pattern: although I tested if my printer is calibrated, the lines on the paper did not fit perfectly.

Next step was choosing a size (L) and cutting the fabric. As this is my first real sweater, I as always used cheap fabric. It is a thin knitted fabric with autumnal colours or, so I try to sugar-coat my strange fabric purchase. As this fabric is a piece out of the scrap box of the shop I did not have the recommend amount of 1,5 x 1,8 m fabric (much less: I had 1,4 x 1,1 m). This led to contorted movements on the floor to get the pattern fitted on the too small fabric... and no wonder, it did not fit. I changed the size of waistband and cuffs and tada, the fabric sufficed.

The next steps were pinning and sewing. As I do not have a overlock sewing machine, I used a stretchy three-step zig-zag stitch. The explanation of the pattern is super clear and I was able to understand everything without searching for a YouTube tutorial.
1.: sewing the raglan sleeves to the front and then to the back
2.: attaching the turtleneck
3.: closing side and sleeve seams
4.: attaching the cuffs
5.: attaching the waistband
Sweater complete…
But as you can see it is too wide and too long.

So on to the next the cold my brain told me in size M. And again, I used a scrap fabric. But this time it was a fabric which I eyed forever in the shop, but it was much too expensive. But lucky me I found a rest some weeks ago in the summer sale. Again, not so much as the pattern called for, but now I was prepared to puzzle it out … or so I thought.
This super cute fabric with its Barbapapa lookalikes was a hell to sew. The backside of the fabric is made from little loops which:
a) unravelled when cut
b) got stuck in the sewing foot and
c) tore the thread
NO FUN!

I nevertheless finished the sweater and I am so happy with it. I made some small modifications to size M – I shortened the sleeves and the body about 3 cm and it fits (for my taste) perfectly.
No longer hate, but LOVE <3

And as you perhaps guessed, I am already making the third one. Now with proper fabric, I bought on the Netherlands fabric market. The fabric is a medium thick knitted one, and it is super comfortable to sew. Sadly, the sweater is not ready, I only can show you some making of photos. (Where you can see that I even top stitched the waistband and turtleneck)

The next project will be a sweater made out of triangles from Rosie Martin I love her designs and I think she herself is super beautiful and has a very cool style <3

Love, love, love the cute cartoon pastel colored sweater on you 😍😍😍. You have so much patience in piecing the pages of the pattern. Gosh 32 pages??? And you sewed 2 sizes??? You can sell the L size 😁.

Thank youuuuu ... the little creatures found their way into my heart. I love cute things :-D and believe me, patience is not my greatest skill. I may have used many bad words this evening. Perhaps our friends above wondered what is going on....

I love this style - I guess the neckline could be made lower (I'm sure that would be possible in our creative sewing workshop). Really like the pattern on that troublesome fabric as well, very cute.
It's great that your confidence about sewing is growing and I like the way you bring your creativity to it :) Sew on!

Thank you, and I also find this style very nice. But I am far from modifying a sewing pattern :-DDD If I would dare to change the neckline, it would probaply reach my belly button :-DD
I am curious of your next sewing projects.

All of the fabrics and sweaters are so cute in these photos. I really like your train station photo shoot - very unique! I'm sure I will never partake of this challenge, but it's sure fun too watch!

Thank you for the compliments <3 And it is lovely to hear you liked my photos (I was had a cold/flu on the photos... but the sun made them nice :-DDD) It is an abandoned train station which is now a restaurant. And you can walk there wonderfully, as it is near a river.

The sweater looks great! The process to make it is a bit unusual but it must be good if you could sew a sweater with such a %€$@% fabric (insert the four letter words you of course only thought and never said). The next one should get even better, I like the tear drop pattern.

As you know I really needed swear words for this fabric :-D But I am happy it turned out so well. I think the process is similar to knitting a raglan sweater from the bottom up (I have never done this, but I have seen some patterns in this style). It is really easy to make. The third one is still waiting... my head was shitty today, whole day headaches. I hope I can finish it tomorrow...

Wonderful, I like the idea of self made stuff, sewing the clothes that is the most exciting because you really can choose yourself, the material, pattern and it is unique, that is why I love that old time when everything could be ordered by dressmaker and I love those shops with endless meters of beautiful material. Thank you for showing your whole process, I find the pattern of your second sweater is great, fits well to jeans :)

Thank you so much and yes making my own "size" was a big incentive... I have a big backside :-D and every bought skirt looks as if it is shorter on the backside on me. So, I started to make my own skirts, which I could adapt to my figure. As I am not very confident with sewing I made many many skirts :-D (they are super simple to make, half circle skirts with elastics) But now I want to learn more, and these sweaters were a nice project.
I also loooove fabric shops (or yarn stores or stores for art supplies...) all the beautiful colors <3

Wow, I think they both look great, first attempt too! That second fabric is so cute. 😊 I've never done a sewing pattern downloaded, I don't have a printer anyway, but good to know it can sometimes not line up! I might have panicked a little. LOL

Thank you <3, but I was also a bit panicked. It was my second pdf pattern and the first was super accurate. But I simply corrected the lines a bit while cutting out the right size :-D

You look so happy making your line of sweaters :D and modelling as well! It looks like a very cosy sweater to have and I totally understand wanting to make a few different colours with exactly the same design. :D
Only last week I bought a dress which I absolutely adore and am kicking myself for not buying a second one in a different colour...

Thank you <3 And yes i am very happy with the second sweater. I love those little creatures on the fabric. And a big yes to the double buy/make. I sometimes think I have a strange figure/size and if I find pattern or clothes that fit (especially trousers), I am very happy (and make more of them). With buying it is not so easy - I as you - think twice before I buy something double, although it would be perhaps a good decision.
Is there no chance to get your dress again, maybe online? Or could you copy it and try to sew it yourself?

Those little creatures are really cute, very amusing :)

Unfortunately, I can't find anything similar to my dress online at the moment, and it's not so much the shape as the fabric. The dress I bought is almost 100% very fine wool fabric, whereas most things I find for sale are half synthetic... I'm sure I'll find something when I'm not looking, that's usually the case with me :D

And sewing myself, somehow that's never an option I'd consider... it must be some sort of a psychological barrier, I guess...

I hope your cute sweaters will be warming you up for a long long time!

Great, you are a pro. The fabrics are Nice, the first looks like the Discord animal you See When its loading. You just adjust the pattern, I do that sometimes but Thats hard I always try on than alter the sweater or dress. Well done.
And great to See you showing off the sweater at the train station

Thank you so much. For me it is still not so easy to sew... I am always afraid to destroy the fabric. And with the train station, it is no longer in use, it is a restaurant and the old rails lead into the wild. We have many of such ununsed rails and stations, because it was a highly industrialized area.

I really love the fabrics you chose and I think that the effort paid off, @neumannsalva. The jumper shape is really comfy but I tend to go for longer length - is that an option in the pattern ?

Oh thank you so much <3. And yes I think there are lines drawn on the body and the sleeve pattern where you can change the length. But it is not so short as I made it. I simply had not enough fabric, so I shortened everything :-DD
