"Rail against mediocrity!"
Everywhere the luminous is being drained
Is a battlefield for idealists and cynics.

This war is waged with words,
gestures, tones,
pamphlets, indoctrination, lies,
propaganda, shock, violence, distortion
& the weakness of denying one's true nature.

           They wanted honey & cream
but I give them bitter gall.
In life's acrid underbelly
                                                     You will meet with yourself.

Why do they run
    into hellacious graves?
Why do they breed ignorance
                    in hovels of the mute?

Speak, even when overwhelmed;
the assertion of the illusory
            is often the prerequisite
            for its dissolution
in a whirlpool of burnished chagrin.

Where is the fear of failure?
Self-judged beings lose themselves.

A fistful of briars!

With vibrant images
             mundanity stokes its conflagration.
Thrown into the furnace of indulgence,
the people have forgotten
their effulgence.

Here it is - all of it!
Take it - in luscious imperfection.

"To live is to have flaws."

Whispers the one who
screams the battle cry.

Notes

What is a quick-write? It is a piece which is briskly created, without too much inner dialogue (similar to stream-of-consciousness writing.) The time frame can vary depending on the length of the piece. For this piece, it took less than ten minutes to write by pencil. It was then typed, and lightly edited. The idea is to make writing something which is second nature, an ordinary activity—an easy expression of one's inner essence as it meets the outer reality.

.

Creation is a basic faculty; it is something that makes us human. It is not something that embodies only our noble nature but embraces our wretchedness all the same. If you are judged, you are judged by yourself alone! Get rid of the assumption that art is bad or good. It simply is. If we have love for an art form, we will practice it daily: the results are of little consequence. What is important is the journey of Self-Individuation, the discovery of the absolute through the vehicle of the subjective.

.

Have you ever tried quick-writing? I highly recommend it for those wanting to establish a practice of writing, and of course, for already established writers, as well. Keep in mind, the more you do it—ideally daily—the more enjoyable and effortless it will become. In your "slow writing," use resources to learn new terms, of course read widely and not just in one or two genres, in short: stretch yourself! Then, the fruits of your studies will begin to show themselves through your improvisatory syntheses in the form of quick-writing.

All the best!

Ever yours,
With gratitude,
Daniel Pendergraft

Sort:

Even though you only took 15 minutes to write the poetry
is very good and well explained in your notes that's why I tell you these
these two sentences.

  • Writing is the deepest way to read life
  • Write is to return the world to its original state, expel it into the territory of what has not yet been named.

Return the world to its original state

I agree, it is an unfurling of sorts: a destruction of stagnation through the inertiatic, an assertion of the subtle through the dense .

Daniel, a quick write, yeah at times I do wrote it, most times I get a splendid idea and I just quickly do a quick write, it's always amazing.

On the other hand, I feel a satirical tone towards this one, I mean it's a bit like shot or like an implied innuendos, I loved the rhetorical questions it gave the poem an immortal effect.

The connection here was divine even if your seem to be questioning something, the imageries tend to connect to the imaginations and paint subtle pictures.

This is amazing as always

Nice, yeah, I think a lot of writers tend to do it from time to time, especially when writing is a daily activity it just makes sense. Thanks for stopping by @josediccus!

Certainly especially when they feel like they're feeling writer's block

They wanted honey & cream
but I give them bitter gall.
In life's acrid underbelly
You will meet with yourself.

I am unable to replicate the markdown you used here. Its still a wonder how you play with all available figures of speech without drifting off point

A fistful of briars!

With vibrant images
mundanity stokes its conflagration.
Thrown into the furnace of indulgence,
the people have forgotten
their effulgence.

And then the big words, not everyone can keep a poem interesting or even make meaningful ryhmes of them. But as always, the point is very well understood.

Great formatting by the way. While i read, i had to observe the pause at each break of line or word.

Hi @fego, appreciate your comment as always! The way that I achieve such formatting is using the   tag which adds a non-breaking space to either side of centered text, pushing it left or right depending on where you place it. It only moves the text a very small amount, so often you have to paste the formula 30 or 40 times!

"To live is to have flaws."
That part reasonted strongly with me because i'm kind of perfectionist and its hard to accept small mistakes, but i'm trying to create a new me that is more permissive.
Never heard before of quick-writing but i like the idea and the improvement on writing that it can create ;)

@ninegags, I used to be a HUGE perfectionist, and it kept me from ever finishing projects or sharing them with people. Once I finally realized "this has nothing to do with ME," I began to create more freely and accept my shortcomings in creating (which is part of what makes us human and allows others to connect with our work!) What do I mean by "nothing to do with me?" It's twofold:

  1. Whatever our thoughts, speech, and actions: it bears little importance to the eternal essence of Reality that is beyond all comprehension. We can do the most horrible or most saintly things, and it is only the drip in a bucket of the cosmic ocean. It is our pride, fear, and other distorting emotional components that make us "care too much" about how things appear to ourselves and others.

  2. Creating is not just a personal process, but a form of channeling, in which we tap into universal genius and creativity through the medium of our selecting. Sometimes our art says more about the collective consciousness and the current state of affairs on our planet and the universe at large, than it does about us individually.

Glad I could introduce you to quick-writing. I am sure others call it by different names, but the idea is the same: to make writing feel effortless, easy, and casual.

This metaphorically poem is giving me some serious points to think upon the different situations of the life. Yes, it is a depiction of human behavior in the form of Media Persons who are generating a war of hatred via their words and debates among the folks. They breed ignorance as they themselves are ignorant!!!!

Thanks lot Brother @d-pend for raising this very important aspect of human life, Superb selection of words <3

Right @salmanbukhari. The people perpetrating such actions are choosing ignorance over understanding, because this is what they feel will fulfill them the most, at the present time. In the course of time, all comes to light, and truth conquers over untruth! In the meantime, and always, we are here with the paradox of light and dark, good and evil, these many polarities: which dissolve into each other and lean on one another for their very sustenance.

Poetry is really a domain of the blessed ones. Good poetry flows in thoughts like blood in veins. Practice makes a man perfect but an urge to write is necessary to write heartfelt content.

Your poem carries the sound message to shrug off the war of hatred which is at display mostly on media wars. It's a dark aspect of being human.

I like a sensational and emotional touch in your poetry with the bitter truths of our time. Thank you for an enlightened piece of wonderful art.

Yes @cheema1, indeed! A sense of urgency is indispensable. The writer feels a subconscious drive to create; they feel somehow this act will be a form of salvation for their baser instincts: create a lasting monument of the stark sincerity of their most inner intentions.

What is mediocrity?

It is leaving town for dung
Having simple ideas when ideals were needed
Creating toys out of robots
Having simpilcity of mind in poetry

I love this quick-write.

Cool quatrain @rexdickson. It made me smile. Glad you liked the piece.

Thank you Daniel Pendergraft

They wanted honey & cream
but I give them bitter gall.

Thank you for your quick writing. This is totally sincere.

Here it is - all of it!
Take it - in luscious imperfection.

This makes me smile. I cannot criticize honesty. I just smile back. Thank you for posting this. And for giving your followers an opportunity to reflect on quick-writing. Most of my poems have been "quick-writing" with some editing.

Hi @mineopoly! That is very wise, what you said about honesty. You seem like a person to observe, rather than to judge. Taking things for what they are is relieving because we realize we don't have to be the arbiter of fate (what a responsibility!)

Thanks for sharing about your process. I tend to write quite fast, as well. The editing process can add a lot of refinement.

It reads as if you put much more time into it. Do you feel good when you're writing it, or after it's done? I feel great when I'm "building" a post and relieved when it's done.

It depends @evernoticethat, sometimes there is an odd apprehension to start writing: perhaps a holdover from when the "voice of inner judgement" used to be very loud for me, and I would consider pieces failures and abandon them. I rarely do that now and tend to complete a piece when I start it.

If I'm in the zone, it feels amazing to be writing it, and yes, it always feeling really satisfying to finish the post and release it!

Line placement elevates this already superb piece. I will have to learn how to do this in markdown. A lot of wonderful phrasing, but I really like that 'whirlpool of burnished chagrin'. Your mind is turned on, no doubt about that.

Thanks for the kind words on this one @prydefoltz. To create this placement in markdown, you will first center text using the <center> tag. Then, on each line, you will place the following formula to the left or right of the text: &nbsp; as many times as spaces you want to shift it. It only moves a tiny bit so at times 30 or 40 of them will need to be pasted! If you put it on the right of the text, it will shift it left, and vice versa. It's pretty inconvenient, but to my knowledge, there is no easier way to do this in markdown (although I could be wrong!)

I think that is the way of it. Thank you so much for the tips:) Look forward to more of your work:)
