My Thoughts on The Platform Right Now

in #steem5 years ago

I don’t do a lot of posting about what is going on on the Steem platform. It’s not that I lack interest, I am very interested in what goes on here. I tend to think that devoting posts on Steem to the state of Steem tends to form an echo chamber effect.

I am aware of being a community leader, and well, sometimes people might actually give a damn what I have to say. So, if you do, read on. If not, well, glad you visited LOL!

I arrived on Steem in August 2016. At the time, the price was around $5, run up in the rush of the new release. Before the price started drifting downward eventually reaching a low of seven cents.

Want to guess what happened? Well people got discouraged, quit, argued about how the platform was being operated, what was fair, what wasn’t fair. Flag wars broke out, finger pointing between groups took place. Sound familiar?

Then, as now, others just put their heads down and worked on building their accounts. They worked on creating connections, building some semblance of communities and rolled with what ever punches happened.

For people like me, new to the concept of crypto and a decentralized platform, it was a pretty steep learning curve. The ever downward drift of the price was concerning. Was I crazy to stay? Should I just cash in and move on? Find another place to write?

I let decision paralysis settle in. I was glad I did. I did some exploring on the topic of crypto trading and fiat trading. I slowly got the picture. The markets was driving the price of Steem and in particular, where bitcoin went, so did Steem. I decided it was time to hunker down and just work on growing the account.

You know what? That is exactly what you need to do in this market. Hunker down, keep on building your account, engaging on the platform and in communities and weather the bear market. The price will move up and when it does, you’ll be stronger for it.

To be honest, I’m even more optimistic right now. I’ve been watching the platform explode with D’Apps and projects that has the blockchain practically pulsing with life.

Are you blind Shadows? Did you hear what Steemit Inc has done? They laid off 70% of their staff. — Yep, I saw it. What I didn’t see was the 130 or so Witnesses quitting enmass.

The blockchain will continue even if Steemit Inc went away. I’m not worried about it. There will likely be some changes, some good, some we might not like as the community may need to shoulder more of the nuts and bolts operational costs in one manner or another. Time will tell.

I don’t actually think Steemit Inc is going anywhere. They will have to adapt. Some of the projects might have to adapt and shift some of their business plan. That stuff is normal. We’ll adapt as we need to. Every time we earn even a few cents on a post, we are building an investment. I’m sticking around to see my investment grow.

I’ll try out some other platforms as they come along. I’m a writer. I want my content to earn as much as it can. I got my feet under me as a writer on Steem, it is and will be my first priority. So far, nothing else has exceeded what I have built up on the Steem platform.

If you are faint of heart, then you will move on. If you got even a bit of a sense of adventure, hang on and let’s enjoy the ride. I’ve met some really great people on the platform. There is a wealth of people, knowledge and skills. Imagine what it will be like when we grow.

We will grow if we’re willing to get out there and spread the word. We need to let people know that Steem is way more than just Steemit.com. It’s more than a blogging platform and yesterday I actually had to educate a website owner that Steem is NOT an ERC20 token

If you’re a writer or vlogger … if you’re producing content on Steem, why not produce some content about Steem and what it offers on other platforms. I have done this twice recently.

The first time it was a post about why I’m still on Steem which I wrote from the perspective of talking to someone who didn’t know what Steem is.

Yesterday I posted about the Steem ecosystem. It was sparked by someone referring to blogging on Steemit and earning Steem. I’ve posted it on a couple of sites at this point. Here is the post if you’d like a look at it.

Steem — So Much More Than Steemit

So, let’s do our part and let people know about the platform. Let them know that it’s not easy but worth learning. Word of mouth sells. So, go talk.

Talking! Finally something I'm good at! ;). Thx for the pep talk. I've been around since 4/2017, and also am glad I stayed active all the way through the bear market. Your words about the price action, that was similar in 2016, speak volumes and needs to be considered before hanging up your posting key! Thx for your efforts!

thanks for stopping by @dexterdumb ... it really does get interesting to watch similar situations going on and the predictability of folks. Really when we think about it, watching the fiat markets, they move up and down just like the crypto ones do. Definitely not the end of the world when it happens.

Indeed. It's been, and will be, one hell of a ride! Looking forward to it.

Hi @shadowspub, I enjoyed reading this post as it is a very sensible and objective analysis of the current situation. The pessimism is not just on Steem but it is across most if not all crypto projects. However, Steem being a working platform, the people involved can be more vocal about the situation. That can be seen as fortunate or unfortunate :)

I largely agree with your perspective and I am taking the opportunity to really build my presence and connect with folks who will survive this winter and emerge stronger

Not surprising that the pessimism has moved beyond the Steem platform. I'm sure the bearishness of the crypto markets is making a lot of people uneasy. In a way it's good to see that the jitters are broadly shared. Good to know you are staying around. If you get a chance, stop by the Steemit Ramble and introduce yourself, maybe take in a show or two.

I agree... just hunker down and keep doing what you do! And maybe buy a cheeky few steem while its a bargain!

i've never actually bought any steem but if I had some spare cash, would be a great time to do so.

I enjoy this platform very much, the communities here are unlike any other I’ve been involved in. I do dislike the ponzi like scheme of things such as the account freedom and those linked to it.
https://steemd.com/@freedom
This account has been withdrawing 50k SBD a week for a while but 0 posts and lots of people send money to it. Not cool.

We will see what happens, I’ve invested some money in taking advantage of super low prices.

You know @cmplxty there is nothing nefarious about an early stakeholder earning passive income off his stake or withdrawing it. If that is ponzi like, then there are lot of business folks in the same boat.

An old veteran and I were sitting at a table one day listening to the others at the table gossiping about some other folks. After a bit he tapped my arm and leaned over to quietly to say, "you know I have a step at my back door that I need to sweep every day. I'm so busy sweeping that step, I don't have time to watch other people's steps." Are you sweeping your step every day?

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanks for the reply, I don’t disagree that it’s ok to withdraw money however the quantity doing so is a bit excessive when there are so many users struggling with believing in this platform.

It's their stake to do with as they see fit. Just as yours is to do with as you see fit. It's not up to either of us to decide what is or is not excessive. They will withdraw or buy in as they see fit for them. How's your back step today?

My back step is looking dandy, thanks. There are numerous alpha accounts that have a hell of a lot of stake and it sits there. I and others disagree with accounts like this existing and there being potential for investors. Couple of 1mil+ Steem holders that seem to be insurance accounts for the friends or family of the founders, if things go south then cashing out they will go. They all seem to be linked together and transfer money amongst themselves.

seems that back step could use a lot more work ... you have way too much time to speculate and project on other people's business. Just saying.

Love you, Shadows. Sure am glad you've stuck around – someone's gotta calm the nervous masses. ;) As for me – I've been decidedly inactive, not for lack of confidence in the platform, but simply due to an absurd amount of 'off-chain' work/obligations. Ultimately, I'm not going anywhere. Happy to know I'll continue to be in good company here...

AWW .. you are so kind @zipporah .. I'm glad to know you are staying around too. We miss your great contributions to the platform and our shows. Hope time and obligations have you back with us soon.

Feel the same way, just gonna keep on swimming and moving forward. Open some doors along the way.

Spreading the love eh @enginewitty ... you better be staying or we'll have to hogtie you to the platform LOL

Lmao now i feel loved! Or maybe threatened - same thing right? Bwahahahaha! Ain't going anywhere Shadow.😎

Posted using Partiko Android

oh @enginewitty... you know I don't threaten... I act ... so good you are going no where LOL

I agree with you and am still plugging along though I'll admit not posting as much as I was while creating a personal site for business.
Like you, I wrote a piece for our local free press about crypto and specifically mentioned steem, but surprisingly got little feedback. Anyway, here with you.

are you building your site on Wordpress @kimberlylane? using Steempress to share the content to Steem? Some really large sites are built on WP... I've used the platform for years.

Back in the early 90s ... I was the person from the late 50's generation trying to talk to people born in the 30s and 40s about this thing called the World Wide Web and how it was going to change how we live, work and communicate. I got a lot of 'she's crazy' looks and very little feedback. Now, those same people having heard me talk about being on Steem... are calling me over to explain what crypto and blockchains are when they hear them talked about in the media.

So hang in there. They are seeing and hearing you. They just aren't making the connection yet.

I'm actually building a site on squarespace. It's more to do with a counseling thing I want to launch, but also includes blog posts.
Thank you for the encouragement :)

This is the kind of faith that I needed to read right now. You can get caught up in whirlpools of FUD... then I go spinning off in another Direction and find that I'm full of enthusiasm in hope again. I don't know why I worry so much bottom line is that I'm a writer and I enjoy writing so I can just hang out for the long haul and watch things creep back up again.

I didn't arrive till March this year so it's interesting to hear your perspective on what happened before that. I too felt a great deal of enthusiasm a couple of days ago and felt exactly the same as you. Then I got caught up in some other conversations and thought oh oh oh.

Anyway I suppose being who I am I am always going to see both sides and flip back and forth karma but the fact I haven't been anywhere and posted 7 days a week since March probably says a lot about my commitment to this platform haha.

You nailed it here @riverflows:

I'm a writer and I enjoy writing so I can just hang out for the long haul and watch things creep back up again.

Writers write ... and that is what we need to focus on. Growing as writers and let the crypto market worry about our net worth LOL

Thanks. I do believe I did! It's funny when you are quoted back to yourself and you think.. did I say that? And that it DID nail it xx

What you said is true, @shadowspub. I've been on this platform for less than a month now and I'm pretty sure the amount of Steem is pretty low when I joined.

But that doesn't stop me from signing up in the first place. I'm trying to find a great place to write and I did not regret my decision on joining SteemIt.

This is by far, is the best community I've ever had. The people here are always helpful and Steemit is not dying because of the strong souls like @crypto.piotr and you. Steemit will not be empty as long as there are brains and hands that are willing to write amazing contents.

I'm a writer and I want to write here. That's why I'm staying. Not mainly for the money but because of the community here. Keep Steeming.

Much love and respect to all of you.

thanks for stopping by @maryclare ... great to see another writer focusing on writing. I agree on the quality of community both on the platform and on Discord. Are you using Discord yet? There is a writers group on there called @thewritersblock that you may enjoy connecting with. They are currently doing some online workshops where we can practice writing skills. A new frontend is coming from them and their publishing house Steemhouse Publishing is getting ready to release it's first novel.

@shadowspub thank you for this info. I've been on Discord but I only joined 1 group because I am not aware of the others yet. I'm actually trying to find a group for writers. Glad you mentioned this. I'll check this out for sure. Thanks once again.

well there you go .. a link to the front door of @thewritersblock https://discord.gg/VvcTQc2 come on in and see us.

Hi @maryclare

This is by far, is the best community I've ever had.

I've exactly same impression. I tried being active on FB or youtube and I encountered so much hate. Which I do not see here at all. Love this community.

Steemit is not dying because of the strong souls like @crypto.piotr and you

It's very kind that you mentioned my name. Appreciate.

I feel like Im blushing already :)

Have a great weekend ahead,
Yours
Piotr

that stark difference between the haters on other social media and the way interactions happen here on the Steem has been noted by a lot of folks. Really interesting how it has developed.

I wonder what's the reason behind it @shadowspub

I think the fact that bariers of entering Steemit are so high (you need know a bit about blockchain and opening account is not easy) are putting idiots away.

Plus the fact that it's easy to "destroy" spammers is also helping.

Yours,Piotr

@shadowspub, @crypto.piotr I think one of the main reasons why this community is filled with love is also because, from the moment you join in, you already feel accepted. The introduceyourself tag is really a game changer.

I mean the people who will teach you everything about Steem as a newbie can be anyone even though those who are already on the higher levels. For me, people doesn't really care about their levels here. The amount of compassion and respect from everyone is what makes this community have a positive vibe. And it's always amazing to give back what you've received.

Thanks for sharing your journey, just finding you now via @crypto.piotr following ya ... the ramble discord looks fun! I feel the same way and it's why I'm here. I came in when it was like 8.00 and then it crashed, at that time I just opened an account and then started engaging about 2 months later, I love the community here and sad to see so many people bail, but maybe that's just weeding out the bots and folks that are only here for financial reasons. I feel this is just getting started, hopefully can withstand the volatile market currently.. ;)

Dear @kimmysomelove42

Seriously its great to see how responsive you are. Steemit indeed need more people like you.

Have a great sunday ahead
Piotr
