Just EAT.

It was early morning on my second business day in Singapore when I went out looking for a place to have breakfast. I went to the one where my boss took us for breakfast in the mall yesterday but it was still closed. Ah, we went there at almost eight in the morning. This time is just before seven.

I went further into the mall and noticed a restaurant that is already open. The name of the food store? Just EAT.

"That's easy," I thought.

I went through the menu on display and found none that sounded familiar. Then I thought maybe the curry will be good. I next paid attention to the price and guess what? Just SG $5.50 for the whole set? Now this explains why my boss was saying that my lunch and dinner hich were eleven and twelve dollars respectively are very expensive.

I looked at the crew and she was busy with something else without any regard to me who was obviously looking at their menu. Maybe because she just opened the restaurant and setting things up for the day, I thought.

I stood at the order and cashier counter hoping to be noticed but to no avail so I called out. I ordered chicken chop curry rice meal set without the coffee. That made it down to SG $4.50. Yay, that's cost saving to offset my boss' concern about my expensive meals.

The crew does not speak English very well so I had to point to the menu of what my order was. She nodded and said, "Fifteen minutes. Okay?"

I thought it was a long serving and waiting time but then I remembered, there is no other restaurant open in the area. I had to say, "yes."

While waiting for my order I had the whole place to myself in taking photos and paying attention to more details of the place. One thing that I noted is the only mode of payment. Cash only. Where is that? Take a closer look.

Here it is in front of the canned drinks. It is not very noticeable at first glance because of the background cans.

Right across the counter is this wall with very nice poster. The nostalgic and sepia mode of the old man on the background is a very good contrast of the colorful bowls of foods. That made me wonder if this restaurant has a legacy or how long it has been in business.

When fifteen minutes was over, I stood and looked for the crew. She was inside the "kitchen" interior of the restaurant. I called out and motioned with my two hands asking "where's my meal?" in silence.

"Okay, I'll make." She said.

"What? You haven't made it yet?" was my unspoken question. I just frowned and she immediately set into motion. My order was ready in less than five minutes.

I was so surprised when I started eating. The curry is so spicy! Our curry powder in the Philippines is not spicy. How did the curry spicy by default? Is this how they do it here? Questions rushed through my head. The more exciting part is that the sauce was poured all over the rice and portion of the slices of egg. That means almost everything is spicy.

"Okay, this will be a very good starter of the day!" I thought of taking the challenge to finish my food in spite of the fact that I do not like spicy foods. I can not eat with my usual pace so I was taking my time. When I finish about half of what's on my plate, I checked the time and heck! I needed to run!

I needed to be at the client's location at 8:30 in the morning, travel time is about 45 minutes to an hour, I have less than an hour to go and I was yet to book a car. I am not the type of person who do not finish her food but I have no better choice this time.

If I did not ran, I would have congratulated myself for finishing my "chili" challenge. I think my elder brothers who like spicy foods will love that meal set.

It's a shame you had to run it looked like a pretty good meal even though you had to wait a while and i love that poster of the old man eating it looks pretty cool 🌝

Oh, you guys like spicy food? Yeah, I think I could have finished the food somehow if I did not have to run. The poster actually makes a memory. I like restaurants that does this as it can have different impact on the diners, can keep them coming back...

Ohhhh...we do love our spicy food no doubt hotter the better...lol 🌝

Okay then, I'll leave everything spicy for you next time. 😝

Thank you so much you are so kind 🤣

Hah! I remember my elder brothers would usually have something spicy during their drinking session so beer could be a good pair for the spicy food, yeah? 😃

So funny, jejejeje... Beer for life

My Wife would have loved it back when she could eat spicy food, I to am not into to Spicy, I noticed they have Milo I used to love that back home in NZ when I was younger i have not had it for years

Oh, why can't she eat spicy food now?

You got keen eyes to notice the Milo. I could have ordered for that to counter the spicy curry. If only I had time to stay longer... I too had Milo and took it as it is (powder chocolate huh?) during my childhood but we had this Ovaltine which tasted more chocolatey than Milo. The latter tastes more of bitter cocoa. I think Ovaltine had more sugar thus preferred by kids. I thought the product was stopped because I don't see them in grocery stores and no marketing campaigns. But it just so happened that it became a topic in our office pantry while we were having a break. One of my colleagues was saying that there is still Ovaltine in few stores. I wonder how I can find those.

NO if she has most of the spices she used to love it makes her flare and have pain so she had to drop them all from her diet, now she eats very plainly :(
Ohh yes we also had ovaltine as well as Milo, I forget what it tasted like but I know I did love Milo back then even though I havent had it for years, most of the family had it as a hot chocolate drink but i always like dit cold

If I remember rightly I think both of the companies were bought by Nestle and are still available in some stores here

I wonder what happened to your wife that she has to strictly limit her diet. Whatever it is, maybe you can look at it on the brighter side that she eats plainly. That makes things easier somehow.

When Ovaltine started to disappear in grocery stores here, I intentionally checked the producer on the package and noted Novartis. That was more than a decade ago. I just checked the internet now and it is saying that Ovaltine is care of Associated British Food. Either way, they seem to lack marketing strategy.

ITs called interstial Cystitis a problem with the bladder with no real treatment and something she has to live with, but with a very plain diet. It does not flare as bad as it used to

I cant remember ever seeing ovaltine on the shelf’s here but then again I haven’t bene looking for it, out of curiousity when I go to the supermarket tomorrow. Will take a look

Is the cause known for interstial cystitis?

No really it’s a disease they really don’t know much about sadly

White on red against ... white on red! Very noticeable, lol. But the price are very good, probably because the "service" component is almost $0 :)

You got keen eyes to notice the contrast. I actually did not notice that while I was right in front of the counter. I noticed it when I was already seated and looking for something to be busy while waiting for my food. 😊

I don't think the low price is because of poor service because after this instance, I had more chances of eating in different restaurants and they have the same price level but with really good service.

Have you ever been to Ukraine? I think you'd love both our food and service, and price as well!

No, I haven't been to Ukraine. Maybe yet. Who knows I'll come looking for you one day... 😊 What have you got there with your foods?

:D
I love to cook, just let me know when you're coming ;o))
!BEER

I love to cook

Cool. I must really look for you when I have the chance to visit Ukraine because I am the opposite. I don't know how to cook! Wahhh... 😝

Deal :)) Guest is a blessing!

You are like my mother. When I was young I was annoyed by visitors because I thought they were grabbing my mother's attention which is supposed to be for me. When I mentioned that to my mother, she was saying I should not be jealous of our guests because they are blessings, or they bring blessings to the house and the family as a whole. Since then, I kept quiet every time we have guests. 😊

Minsan nakakapanghinayang yong ibinayad tapos di mo masusulit. Charge to experience na lang natin... 😊

Howdy macoolette! Very interesting that the lady was apparently waiting on her cooks to show up and was not concerned about your order until you motioned to her! But it was good yes? But you didn't get your money's worth because you could not finish it!

I guess staff of food houses need to realize that one of the reasons why diners go to restaurants is because they don't have much time to spare for their food. That is why they go to "ready-made" meals in restaurants. The crew should have noticed that I was dressed and ready for work so she could have considered that I need to go soon.

I get frustrated when I get such experience and realize that the business owner and the staff do not look at their business from their customers' perspective.

Yes, it was not worth my payment. I could have had a better meal with better service somewhere else if I had better option then.

Howdy macoolette! Yes I agree, they are not thinking very well when they act like that!

Look delicious and good place.

Spicy is not delicious for me. It's a challenge.
