Plastic diamonds, old gold and future mining booms

in #thoughts5 years ago

I would like to move up to Steem Orca level sometime before 2020 and I have just over 7000 to go. I was having a quick look at some of my crypto holdings to see if there is anything I am willing to let go of at the current prices to move me closer. Unfortunately not. I guess I will have to keep doing it the hard way :D

I used to be embarrassed earning Steem here but I have come to terms with it as even though I have no expectations on my earnings, I do work hard to get them and I also have passed a fair bit of that value onto others too who have, passed it onto others again.

I was thinking about what would happen if everyone's earnings were made public and from the richest to the poorest, bank accounts or salary could be seen. Do you think it would change anything? I would predict there would be a great deal of jealousy for a few but I would also think that it would be interesting to see the various reactions.

What about seeing all the people living off various support incomes?

It is funny that we can't seem to get enough of "Rich Lists" but what would the reaction be if there were lists of poor who were singled out because they are the ones that took the most from support services? Wouldn't be a pleasant experience to be that person would it? Would it be deserved? Fair's fair, right? Why focus on the rich? Oh, hat is because everyone wants to be rich of course so want to see if a little bit of information can be gleaned to help the quest - becoming poor is not the goal.

Wouldn't it be one of those "learn from other's mistakes" situations though?

Essentially, if we look at our own past eperiences and think that we could have done different, we are trying to learn from other's mistakes too, that other is actually just us in a different point in time but, serves the same purpose. To you learn from other's mistakes, even if they are your own? This is a bit of a weird question isn't it?

The thing is that wen it comes to our own mistakes we are generally much more prone to making excuses as to why we failed or didn't get to where we were aiming because we experienced it. When we look at the failures of others however, we are less forgiving and offer far fewer excuses as to why the other person failed.

They should have done better, while we did all we could.

While an open wallet on Steem tells about someone's holdings, it gives very little indication how that amount got into that wallet nor the effort or lack thereof associated. It doesn't tell of the history of the person, their work ethic, their skillset or how much time or risk they have entered into adding that Steem. But, that is where people focus and then, blame the 1%.

On Steem, I am definitely a one percenter and pretty much anyone over the 500 SP mark is joining me in that title. In real life, I am at the other end of the scale most probably in Finland but - able to survive and thrive on Steem. I don't know if people really get the massiveness of that on Steem. There are people holding Steem here that if they had to earn the same value in the real world, they would struggle and - that value is going up.

This is likely the same for the majority of large crypto holders who got in early as they likely would have never earned the same amount - and definitely not in the time frame they have. Ten years to become a Bitcoin multi-millionaire? Crazy. No wonder so many of them don't have a grip on reality and squander the opportunities they have.

However, now there are the new wave of people coming in that see more than an opportunity to get rich alone, but also the possibility to actually do something in the real world with it, help their local community, invest into something value adding. While there are still a hell of a lot of Lambo! desires out there, it is a dying breed and will largely be killed off with mainstreaming as when that really happens, those who hold will get their Lambos if they choose and those coming in will enter into a stabilizing economy that will quickly mature. The spread of it all will become much wider and lower.

This is the same thing that wil slowly happen on Steem also as adoption takes place as there will be a lot more people vying for the pool and getting some of it. This will stabilize in many ways and while the high-end holders get their cars and houses, they will sell their Steem to the lower-end. Slowly, some kind of smoother balance line will form and, the masses will support those that can grab their attention and that generally isn't going to be the wealthy.

If Steem does well I am likely going to be wealthy, at least in the Steem sense of the word because I have been working and rolling my gains back into the platform rather than cashing out. There is nothing wrong with cashing out but in my view if I had, I would be in a better but not significantly better situation than today and, if anything major happened I would still be suffering.

I am personally tired of economic hardship affecting my life so, I am risking my stake on the new economies to come benefiting me more than the old. I have played the old economies my entire life and haven't managed to get myself into a position where I don't have to struggle. Sure, I fucked up enough in my choices along the way but, at some point, when am I going to learn from other's mistakes, including my own.

As I see it, anyone suffering economic hardship long-term should be pushing as much effort into the possibilities of the future as it is likely that their knowledge, skillset or willingness to work is not adequate to be successful in the status quo. I am in that category and on the way out of it, even while I work one job, run my own business for another and do all I can to make ends meet in the 'old world.'

At what point do we have a look at our own positions over time and see if what we have been doing is actually leading us to where we want to be? This doesn't just cover the economic domain of course, it covers all of the places we might want to be and I am quite sure, there are also some conflicts between points. For most of us alive today, we have been sold a promise that if we work hard and play that game, we will have a chance of a good life - even though the numbers don't point that way at all for as they say, the rich are getting richer.

I have never really understood people complaining about the world situation but not putting their all into Steem as in my opinion, Steem is one of the opportunities to change the future, not just for an individual but for many, many individuals and if you haven't noticed, most of the people here are battling life in one way or another. What this means is that the people here now have a chance to not only help themselves but, push their gains into their local communities and improve the lives of other people in multiple ways.

Most want a Lambo though, right?

Old world habits die hard and that is what the old world wants - us to invest into their plastic diamonds and believe we hold gold. Most no longer have access to the gold reserves, they do however have access to digital assets. Once upon a time gold lay in the earth unmined and unvalued - times changed.

Mines changed.

I'd say you're on track.
You need to make 30 Steem a day to be Orca at the end of the year.

It's nice to see how committed you are to the platform regardless of what's going on in the real world. I'm the same way.

During all the fomo of the last bull run I never thought I'd even make it to dolphin. Now I have over 10k coins. Dolphin x2

I think I will make it and if not, I will continue to buy in gradually when I can too.

For those who stuck around longer than the largest falls, they are going to be glad they did I believe.

Will there be sayings like:

"Crypto does not smell."

?

I see so many people proud to have gamed the system... Speaking about support services on state level, EU level, etc. The equivalents of whales and plankton out there but truth be told, whales almost cannot afford to state openly their pride of gaming the system. It's the smallest fish who takes public joy in it. People below the line of regulation. Yup, there is a line on the bottom, too - below it you feel as untouchable as those above the top line.

We're living in no laws for the rich and no laws for the poor times...The middle should work for everybody else, too. Same as with age.

Have I mentioned the Flashback story by Dan Simmons concerning such topics? I know I've told about it to a lot of people in live meetings. It depicts a future very nearby in which economy has fallen victim to support systems and bubbles bursting. One person in the US working for... was it 27 or 72! persons who rely on that one's earnings.

"Crypto does not smell."

Despite the stink placed upon it.

Yup, there is a line on the bottom, too - below it you feel as untouchable as those above the top line.

This is the case just about everywhere on earth and I find that in Finland, (one of the richest countries in the world per capita), taking pleasure in petty crime or something gained for nothing is enormously popular.

The state of the world economy is set to collapse and that isn't going to be too far from the numbers I believe as most people won't have the ability to work, even if they wanted to because of AIs and automation of all kinds. I predict there will be the working class of 30% and the supported 70.

I hope to make 15 by the end of the year as well, that means i need Steem to be at 33 dollar to be able to live off :-)
I guess Finland is kinda like Switzerland with 5-6k being a decent wage

I guess Finland is kinda like Switzerland with 5-6k being a decent wage

Very decent. the average is 3200€ a month.

I am looking forward to your orca status. It will be a great achievement . You have worked hard at it consistently over time. It is just a matter of time

I am hoping to get there before prices rise to much otherwise, it will take a bit longer :)

I am trying to get to Dolphin. I am close LOL
That is such a big step to Orca. It is a great achievement
Ahhh we will get there. Just a matter of time.

I feel that we can cross these streams over each other over time. I am using earning from my career to create my stake here while I build it to eventually contribute to a portion of my earnings and therefore diversifying my dependence on that income. Learning from mistakes is also important as I avoid debt at all costs to have only equity in the time and money invested all over my portfolios of tangible and intangible assets.

I think the crossing and fortifying of streams is going to be common place and that will of course push value toward the chains also as people connect their online and offline incomes more intimately.

I hope to save my kid from debt.

I don't get the lambo thing. They're incredibly expensive to buy and insure. Uncomfortable to get in and out, insanely easy to die in, and they're magnets for police and other thieves.
I find it ironic when people tell me they can't afford to buy a big chunk of SP like I did. I couldn't afford to buy $1000 worth of bitcoin in 2013; but I did it anyway (with the support and encouragement of my lovely wife.)
So maybe you can't afford to put $50,000 into the platform; scrape together what you can, and perhaps it'll grow into the kind of stake you can do big things with, down the track.
Let's be honest, it's not going to do you much good held in fiat.

Let's be honest, it's not going to do you much good held in fiat.

It is more easy to swallow as historically, it has served its purpose (even when it hasn't) in most people's minds. Conditioned to believe that what they hold has value without realising that the beliefs are changing in the minds of the people that is going to strip all of that value away.

You'll totally orca this year.

I don't want a freaking lambo, the car I have is much more useful XD I just want to be able to do my thing.

As for putting all in, well I learned from dA and the fallout from that to diversify but not too much XD

There were a couple of periods in dA's history where a lot of us either quit or nearly quit, and in the couple of times I at least backed right off I realised that while I didn't have the same silliness that other people got themselves into where dA was where all their art was stored coz for whatever reason they deleted it off their computer once posting, that having other places to post would be a good idea. I signed up to way too many art sites and also made my blog, and then realised how much of a pain cross posting is, and cut right back to a couple of spaces, and now I'm exploring cryptospace and not letting the "diversifying" get so out of hand again XD)

dA is deviantArt? I didn't know anything happened to it :D
I worry about all of my photos stored on clouds.

I want an electric car and a lifestyle that is comfortable but not excessive. I have better things to do with my time than sit on a beach drinking daiquiris.

Yep, and a few things have happened to it, but it's managed to keep on keeping on XD I'm still posting stuff there but haven't been as into it as I was since before the first major incident that I disagreed strongly with happened. I was actually borderline about to just stop posting completely (but not deleting the account as it's pretty old so is a nice pointer to my other ones XD) and then I accidentally made new friends.

Get some huge external drives and keep copies on there. I have two drives that backs up my entire home directory and all the stuff for my animation project (the latter is actually inside the former so it's a bit redundant but I very intelligently also use one of the backup drives when I'm travelling because my travel drive got stolen for movies to keep the kids entertained on long trips yet again this always happens XD). One is attached to my computer and gets backed up at get stuffed o'clock in the morning (probably about when you go to bed after steeming XD). The other lives at my aunty's house. Every week or so I swap them when I go visit. You could do a similar thing with the outlaws. Now you'll have local backups if the cloud goes poof and two forms of off-site backup if your local goes poof :)

I'd be quite happy sitting on the beach. Not drinking daiquiries though (I don't know if I've even had one of those, I do have a character named Dakarai but he is apparently a rugged manly man that wouldn't drink such things?). Chilling with a picnic after running along the beach and swimming with the kids and dogs maybe XD Otherwise yeh pretty much same. Except with our house requirements all searches for a new one is resulting in closet rooms or excessive houses x_x

I really like the way you think and I am fully agree with you.
Good luck in this journey! :)

Thank you - and you are on the journey with me too :)

Sure! But my way to orca level is scheduled for 2025 😂😂

by 2025, what you hold now will seem quite whale-ish I think.

You'll get to Orca before 2020, I'm sure of that!

I'm just finding more and more value in steem these days! I'm sure more and more people will do the same.

I just had a play around with @cryptovoucher, and it was a bit of a pain to get up and running (something I'll feed back to them) but it's as near to buying steem directly with my credit card as I've ever experienced. There is a hefty charge, but none the less a step in the right direction.

It builds up fast and if combining the possibilities, can be highly valuable - even now (or soonish). I am pretty sure I will get there this year but I was getting a bit antsy looking at my holdings and thinking... should I? :D

I have never heard of it before - will check it out although, I am not planning on buying anything on credit card - one of those learn from my mistakes things...
