Getting wrapped around a 2 year olds' finger: Meeting my niece for the very first time

in #travelfeed6 years ago (edited)

Yesterday was one of the best and most important days of my 48 year life so far; I finally met my niece, the newest (and by far the cutest) member of my family. It may seem odd to some that I count this day as so important but to me, and my wife, it meant a great deal for a couple of reasons. Firstly, as some of you may know, we are a childless couple; In the 31 years we have been together it seems our fate has not been to have children of our own and so to have this little baby in our lives now is a very timely and valuable thing to us. Secondly, our niece lives a long (LONG) way from Australia where we live. She's in Finland which is about as far from Australia as a person can get! This means that we won't see her much in our lifetime and so every second is the most precious of moments. Anyway, after 4 weeks in the United Kingdom vacationing we finally made it to Finland to meet my niece and to spend some time with my youngest brother who I have not seen for 12 years and to meet his lovely wife. (I think my niece's cuteness comes from her mum's side for sure!)

Ok, so...My niece. She is quite literally the cutest thing ever to grace this planet. Seriously, I don't just mean in looks but also in, well...Everything. I think my sister-in-law thought she may be a little shy at first however after about 2 seconds we were getting along like long lost mates! One thing I'll have to be careful of though is that she repeats everything, literally everything, people say and I don't want to get the blame for teaching her bad words that may get repeated at day care when she starts there soon. She can count to ten, say the alphabet, and sings a lot too. I've been teaching her a few Aussie words too and she now does a pretty good version of "g'day mate" which is pretty funny. She is as smart as a tack too! She not only repeats what people say and do, she actually applies it in the right context later. She's a smart one. Cute and smart, a deadly combination I think :)

She'll be turning 2 years old next month and unfortunately we'll be home in Australia so we brought her a few items to give her and last night we had a fashion parade. She was hilarious as each thing my wife brought of out of the bag she'd hold up to herself with a grin and hurry over to the mirror to check the look. She'd then come back fold it (sort of neatly) place it down and wait for the next. Lucky we bought a lot of dresses so we could watch the process repeatedly! It was so funny. We also brought her a necklace with her name on it, a small pile of Aussie dollars for her bank account and some silver coins minted with Australian animals on there to get her going on the silver stacking!

I'm a little overwhelmed (in a good way) by her to be honest and am still dealing with it. I'm mindful of having to get the most out of the week that we are here with her, my brother and his wife. We only spent a few hours together last night and then she had to go to bed (as we all did) and to be honest I didn't sleep very well. It's about 5:30am right now and the sun is beaming into the room (bloody Finland, didn't really even get dark and then the sun started shining around 4am!) and I actually didn't sleep very well at all. I dreamed about my niece last night when I did sleep though. She's got me wrapped around her little finger already and I love her with all my heart.

To be honest I already felt a close connection with her through videos sent by my brother and video chatting that we'd had phone to phone over the last year or so but after meeting her now I feel very close to her. She has recently had some medical concerns, if you follow her blog @smallsteps you will know this already, and we were (and are) very concerned about her. She's not been declared 100 percent yet and we are all still watching her carefully but for now she seems like the best thing ever and I simply adore her so much more than I can convey in words.

The image in this blog is me and her last night. She has another photo of her and I on her own blog from last night and if you want to see us with matching ribbons in our hair head over there and check it out!

So, right now we are looking forward to starting our first full day here in Finland. @tarazkp, his wife @momone and the indomitable @smallsteps are coming over here shortly and we're going to hang out. I can't wait to see them all, but especially her royal cuteness herself, my amazing and special niece.

It's amazing how children who are not your own but related—nieces, grandchildren, what have you—can have that kind of effect. I'm still trying to fathom it myself. My granddaughter is only one, but it's been a joy to have her in our lives. It's been wonderful to watch her growing and grasping things even if she is just starting to walk and can't really form more than a few words.

I hope you're able to spend lots of time with everyone over the length of your stay and that it won't be spent talking about STEEM at all.

Okay, maybe a little. :)

I am packing in as much uncle-niece time as possible. I spent a fair amount of time carrying her around Helsinki today which was nice. She doesn't feel as heavy as a sack of potato's at all! :)

She is such a clever little thing, I'm not just saying so because she is my niece either; She really is! So cute too. I can't stop looking at her and taking photos. I'm definitely wrapped around her little finger!

As for my brother and I talking about steem...Well, inevitably we do but we keep it to minimum so the girls don't get annoyed with us. Nothing ever good came out of having a disgruntled wife... :) I know my place.

It's nice to read a "good news story" first thing in the morning :)

Thanks mate, much appreciated.

I even feel a little emotional reading this post mate. I'm very happy for all of you. Soak it all up and take lots of photos mate. I wish you guys great weather and a very blessed family time together

This is the best post I've seen all day. I could feel your excitement in your writing and found myself smiling throughout as you described your first meeting. Really awesome stuff, even without the Vegemite!

Mate, I am smitten by this little bundle of awesomeness. As a non-parent I don’t really understand some of the emotions they must feel but I can imagine what it’s like for them as I felt so close to her and protective and, well, pretty much wrapped around her finger.

Vegemite would have topped it off but nothing could be as amazing as this little girl. :)

Wow what an awesome day meeting your niece for the first time :)

I'm so glad you made it safely and that the reunion started off well. I hope you're able to spend a lot of time together over the next week. She is adorable and that's great you're bonding so well. You don't seem like the sort of person that kids would be afraid of for long.

Good luck on getting that sleep so far north. Maybe put a shirt over your eyes. x.x

Wow... She's a cutie. I'm happy you got to meet her and she has brought life and light into you and your wife's life. I also hope and pray you both get to enjoy parenthood in many more direct ways.

Beautiful write-up. Safe trip, when you are heading back by the way.

awwww Someone's totally, head over heels, in love!!! I was smiling reading your post and I still am!

I've been anxiously awaiting this post, for the reunion with your brother, but mostly for the union with your niece, and you did not disappoint @galenkp!! She's a total doll!

I know you will, but soak up every lovely second with her and the fam :) I'm so so happy for you and Faith! This is all just so sweet.

And I'm literally shocked at the emotion that I am feeling about it all too!

I’m spending as much time as possible with her and doing my utmost to get her sounding like an Australian before we leave! :)

awww that's awesome @galenkp!! I can almost hear the enjoyment in your words!😅

Yep, it's a case of love at first sight, my friend! Nothing you can (or should) do about it once you enter the "finger-wrapping" stage', so enjoy every second you can and remember all your mates who, to a person, thought, "Awww...if that could only have been me meeting that cutie, @smallsteps!"

One thing I'll have to be careful of though is that she repeats everything, literally everything, people say and I don't want to get the blame for teaching her bad words that may get repeated at day care when she starts there soon.

Welcome to the 2-year-old stage!! @smallsteps has been teaching @tarazkp about this for quite a while now I'm sure.. just as my son has been doing the same! It's such an amazing (and scary!) point in a child's life!!

You get to see them learn so much so quickly, yet you know that if you slip up one time, you're doomed!! Best of luck, uncle @galenkp!

=D

Haha, I guess. but if I slip up and @smallsteps starts saying the F-word at day care at least I'm a long bloody way off in Australia and it'll be difficult for @tarazkp to tell me off! #baduncle :)

The only thing I would be afraid about is him flagging your content on here! But I'm sure it wouldn't come down to that.. right? 😀

Hmm, well I would certainly not think so however I spent all of today teaching the little one some new stuff...Gotta keep the lessons up! My brother seemes ok with it and his daughter's Aussie education is coming along nicely. To be honest she is the cutest thing ever and I'm just trying to spend as much time with her as I can before heading back to Australia...If that means she picks up a few new words here and there...Well, not my fault right? :)

Haha, you are clearly being coerced into spending time with her, therefore you are innocent. I'm glad to hear you're having a good time with your family! And even better, that they seem to be having a good time with you :)
