Market Friday, Maine Style

in #marketfriday5 years ago (edited)

Bar Harbor, Maine. I went back there once again. Who could resist that peaceful piece of Americana sitting on the edge of Mount Desert Island? There is a marina at the end of Main Street where you can grab a tour to see the puffins or seals, and if you are adventurous, I know a boat that takes you whale watching. Of course, that is a tale for another day. Today is #MarketFriday initiated by @dswigle (Denise! That is me!) We have arrived in town and are ready to wander about freely. This is a picture of the inside of the Route 66 Restaurant. Things to eat, things to buy. It is like going to the museum for lunch. Then again, I am never sure if I should offer an entrance fee or bless myself when I walk in. Sometime in her history, I believe those stain glass windows had a church attached to it. I hope you are hungry!

Fridays are all about the #MarketFriday Challenge! Looking to take part in it? Here is how:

How to Participate:

1. Go to the market! Any market will do! Food, Clothing, Plant or Animal, if you wish. You can go to the zoo or an art auction. Anywhere or anything that you pay money for a service. I once went to a nail salon.
2. Take pictures! Be creative (or not)
3. Tell us a little bit about the market, what brought you here?
4. Post the picture(s)
5. Don’t forget to hashtag it! #MarketFriday by @dswigle
6. Drop the link to your post here so I can easily find them

It is always interesting to see the different markets around the globe! C’mon! Show me your market shots! I eagerly await them!

#3MF.JPG

Go to the end of this alleyway and you will bump right into it. Looking forward to it, but, trying to keep it light. I hear that there is lobster for dinner tonight.

#4 MF.JPG

Please leave the link to your post on here so it can easily be found by others. They will all be in one place!! Thank you! ❤

The waitress was adorably charming. As much as one could be while working in a church turned museum sort of restaurant. I couldn't resist the siren singing, the call of the sea, so I ordered a lobster roll, french fries and cole slaw. Don't judge.

The blueberries are in and everything is coming up with blueberries in it. ... I am walking down the street when I am kidnapped by the wafting pleasures of a freshly baked pie. Yes, please. The open window as you are passing by hooks me every single time.

IMG_4689.JPG

I poked my head in here because the ships caught my eye from the street. I get up close and personal with one and can see that these are so very well made. I am not prepared to carry one back home and frankly, I don't want to dust it. So, that makes that decision easier. I promise to come and visit it periodically.

#6MF.JPG

I hope you will join us as we share different markets. It has been such a pleasure to see markets from all over the world. Who doesn't love to see what they are selling? There is always a curiosity attached to foreign ingredients, different produce or any product sold. So, yes! I would love to see yours! So don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery, art galleries, wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Don't forget to use the hashtag #marketfriday and @dswigle.

IMG_4830.JPG

I love this store, Into the Woods. All of their carvings are from fallen trees, they don't chop any down to make anything and 100% of their profit goes to land conservation.

Ribbet collage.jpg

Just a few of the many things they have in the store. Bowls, plates, toys, benches, canoes... you name it, they probably have it. Did I mention how I love this store? I do.

STOP!! BRAIN TEASER AHEAD!!

Question: There are two people. How they can divide a cake into two pieces fairly by using a knife only one time?

source

Answer: First of all, one of them divides the cake into two pieces. Then, the other person chooses the first piece. Therefore, both of them will be satisfied.

As always, there must be a flower. Always. To color my world. This flower is dedicated to #FridaySkyBlue #ColorChallenge by @Kalemandra, who colors my world every day.

Blue on pink, without the heartache
Heartache
Who knew life could be so good?

And just like that, this post is done. I hope you had a good time! A small town walkabout is always a lot of fun! As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to visit and for supporting the #MarketFriday challenge! We will sit for a moment or three and then, we will wander down to the dock to see a man about a lobster. Now, you just sit on that bench and tilt your face up towards the shine! Have a most fabulous day! Cheers!!

Let the sun shine in on your life
So the joy may touch your soul

I have been discovering new places, some right in my own area! This week, I went to a new farmers market that was two minutes from my house and while I was there, discovered another farm that sells eggs. Yay! I love to share and be shared with! I am intrigued by different cultures. It is exciting and yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery, a kite festival! Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! I promise you! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.

Thank you for visiting my post 💖 Because of you, I come back to post again and again, I am encouraged by you, for the time you take to visit, comment or even upvote. For all of these reasons, I am eternally grateful. Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, how wonderful it really is. Kindness counts. Wherever you go, whatever you do.

I always post this poem down at the bottom of my posts. It is one that has become so near and dear to my heart. I only post the most famous part of it, but, wanted to post it in its entirety today.

they set my aunts house on fire
i cried the way women on tv do
folding at the middle
like a five pound note.
i called the boy who use to love me
tried to ‘okay’ my voice
i said hello
he said warsan, what’s wrong, what’s happened?

i’ve been praying,
and these are what my prayers look like;
dear god
i come from two countries
one is thirsty
the other is on fire
both need water.

later that night
i held an atlas in my lap
ran my fingers across the whole world
and whispered,
"where does it hurt?"
it answered,

"everywhere"
"everywhere"
"everywhere"

you are so making me want to visit there, your photos make it seem such a fun and idyllic place to visit
Whale watching puffins or seals, ohh yes I would want to do all of that and explore the streets there they look so charming

As for the brainteaser I was thinking of a more complicated mathematical approach to work out how to cut the cake so it was exactly in Half, you approach is so much easier lOl

here is my market Friday post for this week, Strecthing the term market yet again https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@tattoodjay/market-friday-getting-items-from-or-to-the-market

!tip

Having been one of nine kids I can tell you that this approach worked best for my mom. You can use all the mathematical equations you want, but to have the person cut and the other person select the piece, there cannot possibly be a more fair way. Sometimes we overthink the simplest of things. I know I do.

I have no doubt that Bar Harbor is a place that you are made for and if you should ever move up closer to your kids, it will be an easy D
drive. You have the entire Maine Coastline available to you and it is absolutely incredible. The whale watching and the rest of the observations of sea life is something that you don't want to miss out on if you have never been. I'm pretty simple and easily amused. I love the narrow alleyways and you are right because there was always a surprise just around the corner in them. Thank you so much for your unwavering support and friendship. As always well, I wish you a most wonderful day.

It has been one of the biggest pleasures, hosting the #SteemUSA site with you!

#MarketFriday loves you!

!tip

Yes I agree your way is simple and totally fair ;)
I did look it up when I saw your post and I think with good traffic its only a 6 hour drive so would definitely be doable and it is added to my wishlist your post and this comment so makes me want to go there ;)
The narrow alleyways remind me of some parts of Europe I always love places with streets like that

!tip

Yes!!! Some of those alleyways in Holland and Belgium (and Czech Republic to name a few were so narrow, the mirrors to the van had to be folded all the way in. Hello???

Totally doable and you will not be sorry. It is a fun place although not filled with adrenaline like some trips, except for the boat trip... now, how are you getting LuLu on that boat again?

And Boston. Do you go to Boston? You may even like it better than NYC because of the exceptional history there. That is really close to them. I will say that the weather will be miserable up there, so you better start hunting winter houses out. Mine is ten minutes from the beach, but, the prices are so high now, it may be prudent to sell it now and buy again at a different time. There is no cheap haven anymore.

Ohh yeah I loved exploring those small alleys and side streets in those places as well, infact most places I used to visit, I did see the main tourist spots but I loved getting off the beaten track and getting a real feel for the place.
I am happy without adrenaline these days and as for getting Lulu on a boat, something I just wont try, I think if I ever visit there and particularly for the boat trip that will be me alone I won't try for the impossible ;)
Boston I have visited twice but for meetings and conferences and I have seen very little of it, and its not that far from where we will be so I have already made it clear I am planning on a few day trips there, I will be making a list of places to go and see there

I wish I could plan for an afford a winter house but thats not going to be an option for me, I may just have to be a hermit over winte rlOL

Just head towards the aquarium and you can walk everywhere from there. The docks are right there and they have fishing, and all the sightseeing boats there also! Plus, the old historical part of town is right there. It is one of the most fun cities to go to.

Thanks for all the info I do hope and plan to get to see it one day :)

Well, your people will know it better, but, I didn't want to shove more an more at you all the time. Although that big brain of yours could probably take it. :)

Once you go, you will be bit by the history bug- all over again.

wow, wow, wow!!! What a place to visit @dswigle. Where do I begin? Well of course the food! Those fries and the lobster roll....geesh to die for....sigh. I'll take two or three to go, lo Noticed the blueberry pie window, hmmm did you stop there :) The wood shop, I love it!! Such craftsmanship, those bowls are beautiful. This looks like a place I definitely need to visit, thanks for sharing new destinations! I haven't traveled the eastern shores, definitely need to!

Well, thank you so much! The Eastern seaboard has so many delightful places, especially New England - all historical and many have kept much of that charm with the Victorian houses and many original features on the houses and towns.

Even Charleston, SC, and Savanah, Georgia are heavenly little havens... I could go on and on. The Maine lobster is what I grew up on - being from Connecticut, so you cannot image how shocked I was to taste a rock lobster. The meat on the northern lobster is much sweeter. Yes! I did eat just a tiny piece of blueberry pie with coffee and then blueberry tea... it was a wonderful visit.

I hope you get to go - but avoid going until after Labor Day or before mid June. The tourists make the trips crowded along with the roads... so I usually avoid it then. :)

Thank you for stopping by and for leaving such kind words. Much appreciated! As always, have an awesome weekend!

That's a seriously cool market and restaurant. I'm a lot nearer the other end of Route 66. The last two little bits of the original road are between Oatman and Kingman AZ and near Seligman, AZ. That little stretch is red, made with local rock.

I basically get myself on the highway at some point every year, there is some great places to see (Petrified Forest National Park-which encompasses the old Painted Desert park) not the least of it.

I think I need to give this contest a swing. There's a place in the nearby high country that I probably ought to visit....

Thanks for a great post and a great contest.

Most excellent! I am glad that you gave a little bit of history on Route 66 because a lot of people believe that used to be a road and don't realize it still exists. I leave them in Gilbert Arizona near the old Williams Air Force Base and in Glendale close to Luke Air Force Base. So I did get the opportunity to see the many Treasures of Arizona, which I must not lie and tell you that I was very disappointed to be sent out there, however, I can say that that was probably one of the best places I have ever lived. There's so much Beauty in the landscape that is taken for granted. It is not necessarily a dried-out dust bowl like many presume. The colors on the sunsets are brilliant and I don't think I have ever seen a snowfall more beautiful than that that has been seen on the desert floor with cactuses. I actually saw that up in Sedona and it was like magic. I left the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest and it is so tempting to want to pick up things and take them home with you let me know that must never happen and you have to leave it there or one day there will be no more Petrified Forest.

I want to thank you again for your support and you're very thoughtful words. I appreciate it very much and as always I hope you have a blessed wonderful day!

How come the food always looks so good on your posts? Just so yummy. I know my bunch always give me a hassle whenever I want to get a quick picture in! After all this time they still don't understand blogging lol.

Surely no one could refuse the pies! I love the wood store with their nautical items especially. Life is indeed too short for heartache!

Congrats on being the rally vote! Great post as always!

Well, I have to admit, I only send you the good looking food. The slop, I pretty much keep to myself. :) Nobody wants to look at that, right? For some reason, my kids don't mind me taking a shot or two of dinner, but, I am pretty quick and get in and out.

Nobody walked by those pies! Is it any wonder? I could actually smell them all the way down the street and knew before I saw them that I had to have a piece! Who could blame me! Not to be outdone by the blueberry tea! The wooden store, as you know, is one of my favorites and I spend hours and hours there not even having to buy something to feel satisfied. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words and your congratulations. I appreciate it. As always, I wish you a wonderful night.

#MarketFriday loves you!

!tip

You did send me one of those pies right? You know, how you promised...I been looking every day and nothing.... Maybe tomorrow, I guess!

Keep looking! I am sure it is in there somewhere!

I am here with my MarketFriday post... https://steemit.com/marketfriday/@elizacheng/marketfriday-y4tytcc6

And after browsing your post, I couldn't get the fries and coleslaw out of my mind. 🤣

Love the alley shot too

Oh, aren't you sweet??? I love when you bring me a #MarketFriday post!

To be sure, those french fries were made fresh from the potato, skins and all to add a little extra crunch. I love them that way.

All the older New England towns are filled with interesting, fun and kitschy alleyways that turn into mini towns almost. Some of the alleys connect at the backside and open up into a courtyard. Next time, I will take a picture of that so you can see what I mean. As always, I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by with a hello and for dropping your link! Much appreciated!

Certainly a charming town, Denise and I bet your meal tasted great. You showed such lovely things on display. In the wood place looked very interesting. I understand why you didn’t want to take the ship home- too many things makes more dusting. 😊

Truth! Who needs more work when I can play my day away?

It is a cute little town and i used to go with my family in the summer. We lived in Connecticut, so a nice getaway.

I want to thank you for stopping by and leaving your words. You are so very lovely and I enjoy your comments. As always, have a splendid weekend!

Thanks and most welcome Denise. 💕 Appreciated. Your post are fantastic and a delight to read. I have been in Houlton and Bangor, Maine. My Aunt used to live outside Houlton and I always loved visiting there.

Oh, how cool!! I have an aunt who lives in Ellsworth, right outside of Bangor and I loved visiting her there, although truth be told, we used to go to Bangor as it was more exciting! Bangor is less than 50 miles away from Bar Harbor, and I know it takes me only about 45 minutes to get there unless it is summer - then an hour to an hour and a half is not unusual.

Good for the sagging economy up there, but, it makes me want to not go there at that time of year! Such a lovely corner of the world! Thank you again and I hope you have a most wonderful weekend!
