The Sea is Calling and Sailing on Tall Ships

in #photography5 years ago (edited)

Have you ever wondered what it would have been like? To live onboard a ship so tall, all of the day and into the night? Keeping the sails full of wind, man the sheets, my friend. I can only imagine how magical it would be, to sail the seas, away from land, oh, the sea life is for me.

In sailing, a full-rigged brig is a vessel with two square-rigged masts (fore and main). The main mast of a brig is the aft one. To improve maneuverability, the mainmast carries a small (gaff rigged) fore-and-aft sail.

Brig sails are named after the masts to which they are attached: the mainsail; above that the main topsail; above that the main topgallant sail; and occasionally a very small sail, called the royal, is above that. Behind the mainsail, there is a small fore-and-aft sail called the spanker or boom mainsail (it is somewhat similar to the mainsail of a schooner). On the foremast is a similar sail, called the trysail. Attached to the respective yards of square-rigged ships are smaller spars, which can be extended, thus lengthening the yard, thus receiving an additional sailing wing on each side. These are called studding sails and are used with fair and light wind only. The wings are named after the sails to which they are fastened, i.e. the main studding sails, main top studding sails, and the main topgallant studding sails, etc.

The brig's foremast is smaller than the main mast. The foremast holds a foresail, foretopsail, fore topgallant sail, and fore royal. Between the foremast and the bowsprit are the fore staysail, jib, and flying jib. All the yards are manipulated by a complicated arrangement of cordage named the running rigging. This is opposed to the standing rigging which is fixed and keeps mast and other objects rigid. Source

The large figureheads that had been so popular in previous centuries went out of vogue as they affected the sailing ability of the ship. Cost also being a factor, the figureheads became smaller in the 18th century. They were often religious figures such as saints or perhaps a unicorn or even a lion.

A ship is not rigged until she is provided with all the spars, sails and cordage required to move and control the hull. The straight or curved pieces of wood or metal, called davits, from which the boats carried along the bulwarks are hung, belong to the rigging. All are fastened directly or indirectly to the hull, and all are required to complete her clothing.

Vessels of all classes, from the smallest sailing-boat up to the largest ship, are classed according to the particular combination of their spars, sails and cordage. Cutter, brig, or ship, are only convenient abbreviations for cutter-rigged, brig-rigged, or ship-rigged. They are of such or such a rig.

Brigs were used as a small military ship for war. Because they were so highly maneuverable, they were wildly popular with pirates!

Yo-Ho! Yo-Ho!
A pirates life for me!

wed walk 13.JPG

It is strictly correct to speak of the rigging of a mast or a yard, or of a boom, when all that is meant is the special set of ropes, of whatever size or material, required to keep them in their place, or withdraw them from it, when they have to be moved in the ship. In such cases the part is looked upon as a whole, and is mentally abstracted from the total of the vessels rigging.

The rigging must provide the crew with the means of going aloft, and with standing ground to do their work when aloft. Therefore the shrouds are utilized to form ladders of rope, of which the steps are called ratlines, by which the crew can mount. Near the heads of the lower masts are the tops platforms on which men can stand and in the same place on the topmasts are the crosstrees, of which the main function is to extend the topgallant shrouds. The yards are provided with ropes, extending from the middle to the extremities or arms, called horses, or footropes, which hang about 2 or 3 ft. down, and on which men can stand.

wed walk 15.JPG

The masts and spars are kept in their place by the standing rigging. This is not to be confused with the running rigging, which is used to set and put down the sails. While sailing may seem confusing, it is compared often with being easier than trying to change the mind of a teenager

wed walk 16.JPG

Only a few of the ropes on a ship are actually called ropes, the rest of them are called lines and have a different use. If you want to know more sailing and nautical terms, go here

wed walk 10.JPG

As the whole of the rigging is divided into standing and running, so a rope forming part of the rigging is divided into the standing part and the fall. The standing part is that which is made fast to the mast, deck or block. The fall is the loose end or part on which the crew haul. The block is the pulley through which the rope runs. Standing in sea language means fixed thus the standing part of a hook is that which is attached to block, thain or anything which is to heave the hook up, with a weight hanging to it; the part opposite the point. Tackle is the combination of ropes and blocks; the combination of cables and anchors constitutes the ground tackle.

The function of all cordage may be said to be to pull, for the purpose either of keeping the masts in their places, or of moving spars and sails. Source

In the end, the coolness of its tallness does wear off. The ships do not allow for a lot of personal space and if you don't mind living on top of one another, this may well be your ship. :)) I like a little bit of distance between me and the next guy's body odor. Just saying. They are hot bunks, which means you share and while one is awake, the other is asleep and the galley is tiny so you get to eat elbow to elbow. I am wondering how they did this so many years ago with ten times the amount of people that were on board with me. Yikes.

Don't ever forget what wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

Well... you learn something new every day! I had no idea you were such an expert on sailing, sailing ships, ropes and lines... Thanks for teaching me the ropes, Denise! Great photos as always! voted & resteemed :)

Oh my God, Keith. Where did you get that sense of humor from? I can't believe that you are not a stand-up comedian or a writer by trade. I would pay good money to see you or read you.

Well, accept for here on steemit. Oh my gosh I'm kidding.

Thanks for your many kindnesses and for your support. You will never know how much I appreciate it.

Haha! Did I say something funny? Well hello, sailor! New in port?

You always say something funny. You don't know how to be boring

Nope, I'm just a sad, funny clown :(

No! I refuse to accept that. You may say that, but in the same breath so many people find your personality to be exceedingly fun.

Well good for you. You own it. It's funny that most people do not see you that way, but, instead, see you as a gifted photographer and an articulate writer. It is not something that stands out.

Great shots! Too bad I usually suffer terribly from sea sickness when on boat :D :(

Oh, seriously!!! How terrible for you! In so many ways! I grew up on the water and have spent my entire childhood on a boat or some other ocean vessel. :)

I could have been a pirate! Arghhhh! :)))

The sky was all washed out as it was an overcast sky with no clouds, but, sometimes you just have to use what you have. Try a bigger ship, if you really want to go the way of the sea. Most people don't get ill on the larger ones. It is only the ones that rock and roll!

Thank you for the generous upvotes and comments. I am another day of low voting power, but, it should get better. I actually voted it down to almost non-existence. So, I leave you with a !tip today!

Cheers!

Haha that sounds like a decent background for a sailor indeed :))

I have tried them all - from small fishing boats and catamarans to huge ferries and I seem to be sea sick everywhere :D :( But I love swimming, snorkeling and diving in the sea! It is kind of weird actually.

Haha no worries about the votes - I know that way too well myself, I hardly ever manage to keep my voting power above 60 or 70% :)) We are just too generous! :D

Every Friday, I run a challenge called #MarketFriday and I upvote their comment and tip everyone who participates. I have everyone drop their links to their posts in my comments section and then I go over to their post and upote, resteem and tip their post. Usually, I have about 30% or less left, but, I really don't mind. Their participation is awesome.

I was just in Bonaire in September and I love the fact you can drive up to many places that are marked and do a walk off. Such a cool little island. Thank you for understanding! I never have shut off my voting before. It felt odd. :)

Awesome, I will definitely join this challenge when I take some photos that would qualify for it :) Thanks for hosting the tag Denise.

Thank you!

!tip

I was so sad I couldn't fit this into my walk!! I tried hard but it was the only one I had! Boo! I hope you are having a good day! It is beyond cold here today with the gales of wind blowing me away... Oh, well, if I were a feather! :))

Thank you! Sailing is fun and it is even more exciting on the big ones! :))

I think I could have been a pirate!

Arghhhh!

My voting power is sooooo low, I leave you with a pitiful !tip

NO worries and I loved htis post so its a walk onthe water as far as I am concerned :)

The wind is whipping around here today as well, I do not mind do muchthe cold but the wind make s it to nasty for my normal walks

Thanks for the !tip :)

Oh, look here Kiwi! You are so cool and laid back, and honestly, it deserves more than a !tip ...truly.

Now, I am off for an hour or so, truce intact until I return. You know the rules even if I just made them up! and you need to adhere to them.

Behave. Or I will tell.

Cheers!

You should know me well enough by now to know that I have never been a big fan of rules but as sinc diet is you and I will try to be a nice guy for now So from this point on I will accept a truce and not make use of the !tip command

Are your pants on fire yet, JJ? @tattoodjay? Certainly, they must be. I would be checking it out if I were you.

Just saying.

Let me check, Nope not on fire, not slightly singed I kept to my word in my last comment LOL

Oh, you would have been a good politician. Slippery when wet. :))

I think a !tip I may make you feel a little bit better about yourself. If it doesn't, just let me know and I'll take it back.

How did I tip myself?????

That is so obnoxious looking. Can you delete it? I donate it back to you. :)

Not if you replayed to it :(

Well I love all things nautical and this is pure heaven for me. Every little bit!

I have no idea how it is on big ships like that but with little boats I have been on, the sheet is the line when clearly the sheet seems like it should be the sail. I am convinced that it was so named just to mess with the newbies many years ago lol.
I have to say, no one can burn up the written word better than you omg! Nicely done. Your prose always affects me with a smile.

I am with you on this one! I love my nautical to be sea bearing, you are totally a lake man.. on this we differ. I am not sure I have ever been sailing on any lake, but I do remember waterskiing on Lake Michigan.

There is something about the salt life. I am not sure that I can even explain it, but, there is something that brings my soul alive.

The big ships are the same with the sheet and yes! That is to keep the unknowing from understanding. It is quite daunting to go to one of these classes, but, once you do, it is just a matter of working as a team and the whole machine hums. I love the even smaller yachts that cut through the water like a knife. Oh, yes! That will get your heart pumping!

Thank you for the words on my poetry/prose. It is fun to just let those words tumble out and see what they say.

Well, you know the story on the low voting power, so apologies for only a !tip today! Have a great day!
