Food for thought

in #food6 years ago

In my class today, we were talking about the various prices of things and my student mentioned that the cost of eating healthy is expensive. I don't actually think this is true in most developed countries considering that basic good food will nearly always be cheaper than packaged, quick, convenient alternatives plus, the hunger satisfaction level is different. It takes less good food to feel full than high-carb processed alternatives. On top of this, there is the long-term costs to for health care as well as quality of life and psychological, emotional states.

Then we moved on a little to intelligence.

Most of the brain structure development takes place in the first 3 years of life and it is no surprise that food plays a vital role in the process. How much of a role though? It is really hard to say but we know that if some vitamins and nutrients are missing from diets, brain development suffers.

What I find as both an interesting and sad part of this is that the person themselves has o chance to affect it as, they are under three. The responsibility of diet lays solely on the caregivers, the parents. This means that depending on a host of factors outside of the child's control, they can be fundamentally disadvantaged due to early food or, lack thereof.

If we looked at places where famine and food shortage was common, would we find indication s in later life? Would there be intelligence variations, emotional stability changes or would ability to instant or delay gratification be affected. It is an area I think that needs a great deal of research and as the big data gets more readily available, may lead to large shifts in the way aid and dietary needs are considered.

This also affects the developed countries too though as in general, the lower income, less educated often feed their children lower quality food. How much of it is chicken or the egg though. It is possible that early dietary experience makes children less likely to get an education and this could drive a repeating spiral that becomes difficult to break free from.

Our eating habits are heavily affected by our early childhood programming and the way food is introduced and, the habits of the parents themselves. The ramifications of 'healthy' dietary habits and 'unhealthy' are much further reaching than the looks and disease factors most are concerned with. Diet affects all factors of our experience including our ability to think and feel and much more than physiology should be considered.

I think that I have to spend a lot more time developing some healthier habits for myself as even though currently our daughter eats very clean due to her allergy considerations, as she grows and can tolerate more foods, the habits of her parents are going to play a much larger role. At this point though, she is doing fine.

When most of us consider how we eat we worry about how we look, not how we think but if one pays attention to the changes in thought after eating a salad or, a bag of candy, one can quickly recognize the impact it has and on a growing brain, that affect might be irreversible. More thought is needed.

What are your thoughts on diet?

Good food is essential requirement of our body for a healthy life style. Food is available everywhere at different prices. But heigine is the concern. So if we need a healthy food which is prepared after considering heigine etc then have to pay extra.

Hygiene is important, even more so in some places.

Well said @tarazkp I agree with you.

When we had little ones, my wife was extremely health conscious. She ground fresh fruits or home frozen vegetables for the babies each meal. We avoided all packaged or processed foods. Time and circumstances changed things. There is no possible was to study the life changes this caused.

I wonder if later with blockchain tracking, it will become easier to get this kind of data.

First of: So you are a teacher, May I ask what you are teaching?

From what I have read and heard, diet plays a crucial role in health, both mental and physical. And thus also a large part of development of each. It have been show from some study's, and, from his own reported experience so far, Jordan B. Peterson have noticed that, diet can help and revert depression in some cases.

The foods you eat in various ways littterally effects what kinda person you are. Unless you want to argue that "that kinda individuals chooses to eat that kinda food, becasue they are that kinda persons".

"let food be thy medicin, and medicine thy food" is a saying that holds true in most ways, espessially if you look at all the information about socalled "alernatice cancer treatements" that can be found. Most of them focuses on food and the use of plant medicin.

I do skills training in companies for improved performance etc.

THe kinds of foods, including the gut flora, are vital components of mood and thinking ability so it is likely that changing diet can affect the personality.

Healthy diet is one that everybody must cultivate because it gives the body essential diet, improve the mood and gives a glowing skin and also reduce the risk of disease, we all should try to cultivate it!

That’s a very interesting question. Yet in most places more would come in play as well such as quality of schools. Even in a public school system there is often a large difference in quality, that often also based on neighborhood and such demographic factors. And, of course, education.

Otherwise the only way to truly effectively measure that would be by isolating the children from any outside (and family) influence in order not to contaminate the outcome.

There are so many factors of course and diet is just one, education another. When it comes to early childhood education however, there is a great deal that the parents can effect just by talking with their kids more, something that is being lost as screens increasingly become babysitters. As I see it though, a parents job is to do the best by their kids given their capacity, even if it is not the best possible. Diet is an easy place to have an effect as essentially most people know what is healthy and what is not.

eating healthy is expensive

Healthy pre-prepared foods might be more expensive than junk foods, but preparing your own healthy food is certainly not expensive.

Really, it should be a no brainer that good food equals good health. When my daughters were born one of the things the health visitor emphasised was that babies developing brains need fats. I'm certain there is more to it than that though. When I'm not eating well I can end up with brain fog and my depression hits. So that indicates affects on hormones too.

but preparing your own healthy food is certainly not expensive.

Prepare food? crazy.....

Yep, people worry about if they can fit into jeans while they think and feel like crap.

I am a vegan and for the most part eat healthy. It only takes a small bit of research to eat healthy and cheap. (I feel a blog post coming on) sure, a lot of healthy foods can be expensive but those are usually the pre-made or highly processed foods. it's like the more convenient something is the worse it is for you. (not including fresh veggies)

I think I will write more on this after work or this weekend. I have a lot more to say on the subject but right now have to get to work. thanks for the blog idea @tarazkp :-)

No worries. I think the more people, think, write, read, etc about all of this, the better off they will be.

True. Funny how there is no serious emphasis on the need for natural, rich nutrition during that critical stage. I think I'll read some research papers relating and see just how crucial it is

Because of the allergies, our daughter has a specialist allergy doctor who has made sure that whatever happens, vital components are always included in the food. I might have a more 'formal' read too :)

Healthy eating is a challenge, especially due to cost and the constant chemicals used in our foods and so many things processed now. Interesting take on this subject @tarazkp... enjoy your day!

The chemicals in the raw foods aren't likely to be any worse than the synthetic ones in the processed :)

The parents habits are determinant. I have always eaten healthy thanks to what my mother has taught me with her example. I know people that never eats salad, and you can notice by the look of their skin. There are kids that always drink soda or artificial juice because their mothers are too lazy or ignorant to buy some fruits and prepare natural juices.

Not enough fresh vegetables (or decent meat if not vegetarian) and of course, not enough water. Simple things, easy to do, everyone knows yet, many lack.

By the way, I just signed up in initiativeQ with your link, I think you have to confirm that.
