Leaving Steemit...for SteemPeak! And other interfaces...

in #steemit5 years ago

I've pretty much given up on Steemit. The front-end that is. I like the Steemit front-end, Condenser, but it's been a year since multiple users suggested multiple ways that Steemit could improve Steem and Steemit. The replies to that Steemit blog asking for community input is rife with great ideas on how to improve Steem and Steemit. I don't think that all of them should necessarily be implemented, but I personally believe that if a few of them had been implemented, some of them quite easy to do, they would help quite a bit.

The Steemit front-end, Condenser, is a very good, functional interface, but it has a lot of small problems that, frankly, suck. The main way to discover posts via the Steemit interface is "Trending", which sucks. Some of the solutions to this are quite difficult to implement, but we do have quite a few developers here, and if Steemit had engaged the community in open source efforts, we could have gotten even some of the most complex efforts developed. One such way is to use AI, which the new interface, Steeve, uses. So, clearly not impossible to implement. SteemPeak chose to simply display the posts that have been chosen by curation teams. That is likewise a perfectly valid solution.

I personally think that they should have worked on an AI solution, as well as implementing build in curation tools.

But they did nothing.

I understand that they can't do all of the suggestions made by the community. I don't think it's even a good idea to just adopt every suggestion. A good development team takes suggestions and determines the best course forward to further advance their project. Instead, after seeming like they were actually listening, they for some reason decided to drop all the suggestions and enter a maintenance mode for the Steemit front-end. What kinda fucking idiot puts a project in maintenance mode when there are well known issues and it's still in beta?

There were a ton of small ideas that were easy to implement, and they just dropped them and did nothing.

One such suggestion, allowing people to promote posts into Trending, and possibly people's feeds, would have burned a TON of Steem/SBD, lowering the supply, and possibly making the current suggestion a lot better. It would have also caused anyone that legitimately wanted to advertise to burn the money rather than helping to support bidbots that don't give a shit about what content they upvote to trending.

With all of this in mind, I decided to start trying alternative interfaces. Mainly I've been trying out SteemPeak, but I did give Steeve a shot today.

SteemPeak is pretty cool. Ironically I haven't been checking out their curation discovery thingie too much. What I like the most about it is it's grid mode. Though it does need to perhaps add a few extra posts before you scroll to the bottom, as sometimes you end up with a blank spot on one side that you have to scroll back up to see what post gets put there. It's publishing window has also frozen a few times on me while uploading, and I've hit the limit before on image uploads per day during a particularly image heavy post. Then I had to move it over to Steemit to finish it. The image upload button also sucks, and for some reason it doesn't support drag and drop on Firefox for Linux, or at least not mine. It's a pretty cool interface though. I think if everyone used it, we'd be in a lot better situation.

Steeve likewise is pretty cool, but it's way more green. It's supposed to be just a proof of concept, so in that regard, it's really fucking good. But DTube started as just a proof of concept at first as well. The icon on the upper right that looks like it would take you to settings just lets you turn on night mode. It annoys you every time you post a comment to put a footer on it, which I frankly don't want to do. There's no option to change that in the settings, once you find them. Adding bookmarked categories likewise didn't seem to work for me. The "Explore" category, which uses their AI I assume, is pretty cool though. I found some cool posts with it. I also like that it puts links to other posts under a post after you're finished reading it. This allowed me to quickly see some other posts that I liked. I think with a bit of polish, Steeve will be a great interface.

After trying them both, I started to feel like I wanted to grab some features from both, and mesh them together. Would be cool if you could easily cut and paste together your own version of a perfect Steem interface. Right now, they all have their pluses and minuses. I think they're all awesome. We just have to pick which we like the most.

So here we are. Do we just abandon Steemit? Do we pick another interface that we like more? Do we give them a portion of our already meagre earnings? Well...some of us are earning a lot better than others.

Steemit entered maintenance mode when it wasn't even ready to launch out of beta. We weren't ready. The majority are still using Steemit. It's part of why it's so hard for good posts to get rewards. No one can find them. No one's reading many of them. They just have to hope that someone shares the link with friends, or join a circle jerk, and maybe get a few cents, or maybe more. If their community is a bit more than just a circle jerk, maybe they'll get a reward more befitting of the worth of their content. Maybe someone will share their link with a curation group. Then they'll get upvoted by that curation group and the followers of their votes, and maybe possibly someone from SteemPeak, and that will be it.

That's what this place is like now. There's no community tools built into Steemit. They didn't try to do anything in this last year to improve anything. But the other interfaces have created their own beneficial interface. Right now, as it is, I think everyone should be trying the other interfaces and picking their favourite, until Steemit gets their head out of their ass.

Right now, I think I'll stick to SteemPeak for the most part. I will also occasionally peruse via Steeve. At least until SteemPeak totally steals their idea of putting suggested posts below a post. It kinda sucks using two interfaces, but I like both. I also will occasionally post via Steemit, because SteemPeak has a limit of 2 megs per day for images.

Perhaps they can add a way to pay for more, or interface with an account on some image upload service or something.

This is a great article on other available Steem interfaces. I am surprised many Steemians are still thinking that Steem = Steemit = steemit.com. We need more articles like this to educate the public.

Both SteemPeak and Steeve are interfaces that I find promising. SteemPeak has a very user friendly interface while Steeve is excellent for content discovery. On the mobile application front, I am loving what Partiko is doing. Really forward to what the teams can produce.

Yeah, a few users seem to like Partiko.

I find both SteemPeak and Steeve "promising" as you said. I really like Steeve and they seem like they are under active development. I don't like how they display posts currently, as I would prefer less space on the sides, but that could easily change. SteamPeak is really nice as far as an interface goes, but it is also very heavy.

As it is, I've found myself using both concurrently and manually switching between the two. I often switch to SteamPeak when there are images that I want to view and switching to Steeve when I want to see what the "Read Next" section will list.

Either interface, with some changes, could be really something. Steeve has the AI, which is a bit more difficult, but not impossible. If SteemPeak produces something similar, I might find myself using it more. If Steeve works on their UI a bit, they could be really something. Right now they're clearly in alpha but I don't think the changes necessary to make it a lot better interface are that drastic.

There's also Busy, which I haven't checked out in quite a while. A lot of people like it. I should probably check it out again.

I think given that a perfect model for what a user experience should be is ubiquitously present in the world of mainstream social media, we shouldn't still be launching multiple interfaces that do basically tthe same thing with a slightly different user experience.

This should be a done thing by now, settled. Now it's time to develop new usage concepts such as Dtube for videos, Dporn for porn, SteemSTEM for research, Dsound (or whatever) for music, stuff that wouldn't otherwise fit in the blanket 'facebook' of the blockchain.

If steempeak is missing AI, then steeve should fuse into steempeak. Steemchat should fuse into steempeak, and so on until you have a properly functioning social media site of the likes of things at leastt as recent as 2005

People like different things, so I think different interfaces can co-exist.

But...Steeve's main feature is just the addition of AI for related posts. Considering their interface is still incomplete, if their "competition" adds even a basic AI to help find posts, they might find that most would prefer to use those interfaces. I think they're behind even Steemit when it comes to interfaces. Not only is Steemit more complete, but it's interface is cleaner.

If Steemit had spent their time creating some form of post suggestions feature, they would likely not even exist.

Or just an intuitive way yto actually see what a person's page is actually about rather than a constant stream of posts. Like a way you can actually present your best work on your own front page either via 'pinning' or folders or a timeline chart you can click on certain dates or titles that interest you. I'm just sick of this 'infinite scroll' culture. My recent blogs are dumb shit basically, but I have some crazy amazing stuff in the past I'd love to feature on my front page tto show that it's 'what I do' here

Yeah, I think a way to pin posts or similar would be great. But an interface would have to actually be doing some form of development to make changes. :P

I'm kinda glad that steemit.com can now step into maintenance mode now that we have viable 3rd party front ends popping up. IMO this is how it should work; condenser is a fairly bare-bones affair that is feature complete but so generic it appeals to almost nobody. That then provides a solid base for the 3rd party devs to innovate upon and build some killer UIs that are more tuned for the needs of individuals and communities. It's a healthy evolution imo.

But the problem remains that many use that interface, or at least start on it. There are many small changes they could make. That's the source of my annoyance.

But I do think they should keep it as a simple functional interface. I like it like that.

Have you used Partiko on mobile for Steemit? If you have what do you think of it?

No, I haven't. I don't really use Steem on my mobile. I don't really like the idea of reading posts on the tiny screen. I probably should start though, as I sometimes read or watch movies in bed before I sleep. I hope I don't want to leave any comments though, because typing on a touch screen is a bitch.

I'm one of the newer users, that was forced into trying anything else besides steemit. As a mobile user I find partiko to be a life saver. I also tend to think I well represent the wave of potential new users that are more than adept at tab/phone usage. While a laptop etc would be great it's not quite feasible for your everyday user of social media and the dapps being developed here. I'm also sick and tired of support people telling me, oh I dunno I don't use mobile devices, its beyond frustrating, seems elitist and is sure to drive away, shall I say normal humanoids. @partiko rocks for me. Now if I could access my wallet without using stinc!

There's a Steem wallet called Vessel.

I don't think it's necessarily elitist that some people don't use Steem on their mobile devices.

I personally just hate trying to type on my touch screen. It's why I put off buying a touch screen phone for years. I barely even text because typing is so slow on a touch screen.

I'm considering getting some type of device in the future with a keyboard. There are a few small 7 inch "laptops", known as ultra mobile PC's. There are also 2-in-1 tablet convertibles. Maybe when crypto goes back up.

A lot of people use mobiles today. Plenty of their use it as their main or only device. There are also plenty of people that use computers.

The Steem community is full of geeks, so a lot of them use computers A LOT. It's not likely elitism, it's just that because it's a crypto community, a lot more people are on computers, cuz they are geeks. I mainly just use my phone for calls, games, and watching videos in bed, and that's only cuz I broke my tablet a while ago and never bought a new one.

Yes for sure I understand the community here is more geek driven, I wasn't saying that simply not using mobile is elitist, but the discord channels and support offered to mobile users is lacking. And if you're developing dapps etc. than either hire non geek support staff or get acquainted with reality in 2018 and be aware of bugs and glitches for mobile users. Being told it works for me on my rig and I'm not a user of mobile devices will certainly rub a new user that only has a phone the wrong way. For instance I can't use a certain sharing dapp bc not a soul there can help me except to say quit being lazy and manually type in your 52 key active key that can't be copy n pasted. This is troubling and resulted in me getting kicked out of their channel for getting pissed when person number 4 told me, are u long pressing the key! And it's so easy my mom can do it! I went apeshit on them to say the least,

I've had similar experiences with other dapps on mobile, well all of them actually. Except the one I use now solely..Plus partiko has amazing support staff, geeks are great for dev work but staying out of helping us regular users if all you can offer is I don't use mobile devices, like ever. It's absurd. Sorry rant over lol

Oh yeah, that's certainly...well...stupid. Linux users have been getting crap like that for years. Rather than forwarding the issues to the developers or putting it in a bug report or something, they just ignore it. It's...annoying. Hell, they could at the very least tell you how to make a bug report yourself.

An app or website should endeavour to support as many platforms as possible.

Thank you so much for mentioning us!

Thank you so much for your interest! It's definitely worth trying!

Thanks for this! The editor on Steempeak is really slick too. Now if only there was an easy way to re-do all the bookmarks I've saved with steemit URLs...
