My First Ever DTube Video & First Time On Both Sides Of The Camera!

I decided to put together a short video. It's the kind of intro-vid, which gives a different flavour to a blog when you see someone you've interacted with - and possibly formed a mental image of lol - on video for the first time. Ok, self-presentation can be a little contrived for sure, although I'm still in my pyjamas for most of the clips (I tend to live in pyjamas when I'm not working). This is my first ever video upload to the blockchain via dtube, it's also the first time I have faced a camera and spoken to it with the explicit intention of sharing the output with the world.

As for shyness, not really, although I don't feel as if I have a comfortable camera manner. My main awareness of having a camera filming was where it was positioning itself as I spoke to it - a kind of multitasking that I guess I'll get better at with practice.

As for the shooting, as you see I just used my phone. The front camera is cloudy but the rear one is clear enough in good light. However, the technical prop which made a lot of this video possible is a selfie-stick that I made for myself out of two bits of wood and a grip. It didn't take me very long to put it together and I find that it works really well.

Right, video taken, it then came to editing time. Premiere Pro - my first choice - ran very slowly on my ageing machine, and so after a little research, I settled on OpenShot Video Editor - a simple, open-source bit of software that did the job just fine. The video is by no means slick, and the audio levels are all over the place, but I have the solid impression that a section of the Steem blockchain does have the endearing quality of valuing content as much as, if not more than, form (yes? no? lol), and I am happy with the casual, amateur feel to my video.

Acknowledgements & Thanks:

  • @wanderlass was the example of encouragement and inspiration to even think about making myself the subject of my own videos. Her 'wandervlog' - courageously stepping out of initial masked shyness, prodded me towards a bargevlog of sorts lol. This pushes a boundary for me and I welcome opportunities to step out into the unknown.
  • The inspiration for doing a 'reintro-type' video and sharing a bit more about myself came from @minismallholding, who didn't herself do a video btw :).
  • @katteasis sent me in the direction of OpenShot
  • @valorforfreedom gave me the general rundown on d-tubing, including the tip to use Handbrake in order to vastly reduce the size of the video file without significant reduction in quality - 430MB down to 132MB for this video!

Whilst shooting, I referred to a few of my blog posts which had to do with the subject at hand, including a delightful display of Shanti and Ben-the-Nut playing tug-of-war with the poor toy lion again. I link these below in case anyone is interested :)

I enjoyed hearing your voice. Your accent seems like a melodic mixture of cultures.
And what a beautiful old tree you were sitting in. I can see why you head there on your lunch breaks.

There have been only a few people who, after hearing me speak, have identified it as an Anglo-Indian accent. It's a blend, a mix, just like me - thanks MSH :D .... the trees in these old estates can easily be a few centuries old, I can't count how many times I've returned from my lunch break fresh and relaxed 🔆

I probably wouldn't have identified it had I not known your mix. I was expecting a Scottish one, but was so pleasantly surprised to hear the Indian in there too.

Thank you 🔆 - 18 years in India and then other layers on top of that :)

Nice one for a first time :) I can see that you like to stay in your own world outside of people which is quite normal for all of us creators :) you smoked a blunt in this forest? ;-)

Wish you all the best.
Bless.

Thank you @neopch, yes you are spot on about spending most of my time by myself :) ...... I had a look at your dtube profile your podcast 'how to record a video (with a calculator lol)' - standing in front of people and 'not caring' is where I would like to be, and I hope to get to that stage..and yes, that's what it was in the forest :D. I very much appreciate your encouragement.

Bless Ya! :)

Nice to meet you @barge! The dogs are mega cute and 10/10 for the diy selfie stick! I love it!!

Thanks @slayerkm, great that you like the selfie stick, I'm very pleased with it :D. I see you're the founding daddy of dtubedaily - very nice - and I see I've been visited by both of you from your recent podcast, which I'm listening to atm. Nice to meet you too 🔆

:) I am one of the founders yes haha. thank you for listening to the podcast :) means the world to me.

Yeah it was really good.....enjoyed your most recent upload too, with your old 'jackass' vids and 'old' friend Kush.......:)

It's nice to know you brother barge! Awesome to see your dogs and where you live. I see that you are a tranquility guy. Yes, I know that you don't use the phrase like that 😂 But hey! I know you understand me 😉

Winny out... for now 😉

Thank you @myndnow, for visiting and for your encouraging words - I'm cool with 'tranquility', and sure I think I understand lol. I'm listening to your podcast atm btw - resteemed by @camuel. See you around 🔆

I'm pleased to have caught this before it goes POOF! and falls off DTube. Nice to put a face with the boat.

Thanks ASE 💜

this was very refreshing. sweet. humble, joyful. and yes... your accent is amazing, just like that tree and that dog ruckus.

Hey thanks for stopping by and for picking up on positivity and for saying nice things :). I love the idea of integrating sketches into vlogs - as you have demonstrated and pointed out whilst doing so (your steemfest vid). Good luck and see you around 🔆

Whoa, well done my friend! Feels a little weird, doesn't it? Wait till you're doing it outside with punters around ha ha. I find it quite therapeutic in a funny kind of way - so great to see you doing this and I hope you find it in you to keep going with it. Quick n00b tip that's really hard to get the hang of - look at the lens and not the screen. It's a lot easier when you don't have a screen at all, cos when there is one, you naturally want to look at that.

A selfie stick made by your selfie - nice!

LOL, yup, I can't fully relate to the figure on the screen vs my sense of 'I' :) ........yeah man, like going into town or a place like a poopermarket with homemade selfie stick and chatting to camera - I'd love to eventually not care enough. And thanks for tiptop, I totally realised I was looking at the screen and not at viewer. Good point about no-screen but difficult outside - but I'll remember to look at the lens next time. Cheers Cams

Hey @barge, It's so exciting to see you posted a video. It's hard to express how excited I was. It was similar to the feeling one might experience when anticipating meeting someone I suppose.

You seemed very comfortable in front of the camera for your video introduction. I sensed a bit of excitement in you when you were sharing footage with your dogs, and while showing us your area in the woods where you like to relax. It was actually quite the pleasure to watch. I sensed so much positive energy in your home, as well as in your presence.

The selfie stick was a masterpiece @barge, I loved it! the fact that it is made with such common items, including a giant hunk of wood that increases the structural integrity 100 times a store bought stick. That is a truly epic selfie stick.

Now I did have a preconceived notion in my mind of what I thought you would sound like, what your demeanor would be, overall presence, ect. The image of you in my mind was pretty accurate, very much actually. That happens sometimes, and it's almost like a dejavu experience for me.

I really liked it, and I think you did a wonderful job. The selfie stick must stay, and I would definitely love to see more barge vlogs if you decide to make more!

Much love,
@futuremind

Hey my friend, this is a real feelgood comment and I was buzzing after reading it 🔆 ...I see what you're saying - thanks man, nice to know my manner comes across as comfy (within myself!?). Very nice you were into the whole barge-vid thing, and picked up my enthusiasm over the dogs and the selfie stick lol, it's great so far. You're very intuitive FM, and we've had some in-depth connected interactions, so I'm not surprised you picked up an accurate mental image of barge that matches the physical manifestation :) ...... I enjoyed making the vid and will defo keep the stick for more of them. Thanks bro 🔆

Beautiful video dear friend...
Nice article..
