Happy Birthday, Robert Burns!

Burns Night is celebrated on January 25 to commemorate the birth of the beloved poet. Everything revolves around the Burns Supper! So don your tartan, drag out those bagpipes and let's start singing Auld Lang Syne! Later on, when we have nipped enough whiskey, we can take turns reciting our favorite piece of poetry. Unless you are drunk brave enough to sing one of his songs.

Dash it, man!!! Where the haggis?

It is not only customary but proper manners to bathe your haggis with a splash of whiskey sauce, liberally at best. When I put that through the translator, it was pretty righteous and said, in true Scots fashion, that is whiskey served neat, to you.

Address to a Haggis

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,
Great Chieftain o’ the Puddin-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy of a grace
As lang ‘s my arm.

The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin wad help to mend a mill
In time o’ need,
While thro’ your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.

His knife see Rustic-labour dight,
An’ cut ye up wi’ ready slight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like onie ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin, rich!

Then, horn for horn, they stretch an’ strive:
Deil tak the hindmost, on they drive,
Till a’ their weel-swall’d kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
Bethankit hums.

Is there that owre his French ragout,
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad mak her spew
Wi’ perfect sconner,
Looks down wi’ sneering, scornfu’ view
On sic a dinner?

Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckless as a wither’d rash,
His spindle shank a guid whip-lash,
His nieve a nit;
Thro’ bluidy flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!

But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread,
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He’ll make it whissle;
An’ legs, an’ arms, an’ heads will sned,
Like taps o’ thrissle.

Ye Pow’rs wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o’ fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu’ prayer,
Gie her a Haggis!

By Robert Burns

Gie her a haggis!!!

IMPORTS of traditional Scottish haggis have been banned in the United States since 1971. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has long objected to one of the key ingredients in haggis – sheep's lung. No food for human consumption, whether made locally in the USA or imported from overseas, can contain sheep's lung. source

For those of you who purchased tickets for the “Wild Haggis Hunt”, I'll just be standing here counting all them as they come in. Good luck to all. Oh! You there! Don't forget yer whiskey!

Yes. My private stock.

Robert Burns would be proud! We pulled on our tartans today, hunted and drank, drank and sang, recited poetry laced in whiskey and had us some haggis, with a splash of the good stuff. I would say my day was a success! Now cheers!

Robert Burns died on July 21, 1796, when he was just 37 years old. He was buried with full civil and military honors on the day his son Maxwell was born. A memorial edition of his poems was published to raise money for his wife and children, this according to the BBC.

The best laid schemes o' mice an' men Gang aft a-gley, An' lea'e us nought but grief an' pain For promis'd joy.

The Burns supper is an event celebrating the life and work of Robert Burns – combining haggis, whiskey, poetry and most importantly, bagpipes! A Burns Supper Bagpiper is traditional and has a most important role.

Of all the roles the bagpiper carries, the most important to me is the factual talk about the history, physical characteristics, and habits of this mystical creature, the Haggi Tres Tripodes Creatura Inexpugnabilus (its Latin name). He talks about how the Haggis survived the natural disasters which wiped out the dinosaurs, and of the risks, today’s Haggis Hunters face to catch the Haggis about to be eaten. Historical accuracy is guaranteed! The source was the ScottishBagpipers.com in part. For some reason, it wouldn't source correctly. Sorry.

Flowers. Always, to color my world.

A whisper left upon my lips. The shadow of night caressing my soul. The stillness in my heart, as the sweetest of dreams gently kiss me goodnight.

Oh, your loveliness carries soft delicate feelings - like a warm whisper passing swiftly by.

And just like that, this post is done. I want to thank you for stopping by and helping catch a haggis or three, and while I am still on the hunt, I am sure I will do this again tomorrow! Have a most fabulous day!

Scots Wha Hae

BY ROBERT BURNS

Scots, wha hae wi' Wallace bled,
Scots, wham Bruce has aften led;
Welcome to your gory bed,
Or to victory!

Now's the day, and now's the hour;
See the front o' battle lour;
See approach proud Edward's power—
Chains and slavery!

Wha will be a traitor knave?
Wha can fill a coward's grave!
Wha sae base as be a slave?
Let him turn and flee!

Wha for Scotland's king and law
Freedom's sword will strongly draw,
Freeman stand, or freeman fa',
Let him follow me!

By oppression's woes and pains!
By your sons in servile chains!
We will drain our dearest veins,
But they shall be free!

Lay the proud usurpers low!
Tyrants fall in every foe!
Liberty's in every blow!—
Let us do or die!

I have never had haggis, yet I have had black pudding...which is not really black or really pudding- at least not like how mama made it!

This post gives me an idea tho. I will find the date of Mark Twains passing, then dust off my old pipe and have a bowl while enjoying the view of the water. I believe Mr Clemens would approve.

Oh, you are not missing a thing by not having haggis. Trust me on that one. Your mama would never make something like that! Well, not if she loved you!

I do believe Mr. Clemens would approve!

For your information, the ole guy met his demise in Connecticut. We loved him so...

Born: November 30, 1835, Florida, MO
Died: April 21, 1910, Redding, CT

I hope that helps.

Oh I don't know. Mom made pigs feet. The stench would wake me up! She never convinced me to eat them. Lol

Oh thanks for that. Not too far away, April will be here before you know it. I always loved the wit and wisdom of Mark Twain.

Pigs feet were eaten at my house. My father wasted nothing. I don't remember them smelling, but, he may have picked them.

For sure! April is right around the corner!I can hardly wait to see what you come up with!

Oh it was coz they put them in this gelatin stuff...omg I can smell it now!!! LOL

Oh, yes! That is totally gross. Ewwwwww. You win. That is worse than Boom tub. Wait... hmmmm. It is a toss-up.

What a beautiful tribute to a poet who sang about the pleasures of life related to eating and the traditions of his land. With Scotland in his veins!
Loving greetings, @dswigle!

Thank you so much @zeleiracordero! I think he had an interesting tradition and that it carried forth all these years is amazing.

It is a truly fun and interactive history. Who wouldn't want to go haggis hunting when they were a kid?

Thank you for stopping by and leaving your words behind! Have a great day!

He was a bit nuts old Burns eh! I had my haggis, but I had to jazz it up otherwise it's yech :0)

Fair enough! Hehe! I love the haggis stories that come from Scotland. It is a bit like snipe hunting here in the States. I'm not sure which one is harder to catch, although I have been to a few snipe hunt, usually while we are out camping in a group of unknowing fools.

I was certain I would have to bathe the haggis liberally in whiskey, getting it drunk, so it had no memory of me not eating it. LOL

Thanks for stopping by! Have a great day.

There you are again with the skirts!

I knew you wouldn't be long going back. :)

{{ hugs }}

I know, right? Once you turn, there is no going back. Truth. Although, today I gave in to a pair of leggings a light sweater. Then wouldn't you know it? Sun and shine to spoil that moment. :)

It's a gorgeous day in the neighborhood! I hope your Sunday is too.

!tip

It's a toss up on what to wear day to day for sure !

I mean, you know you should be having to dress for winter, but winter is being such a tease, showing up, not showing up.....

That's almost sacrilege to say sun and shine spoils any moment.... I can't wrap my mind around that statement. LOL !

It IS a gorgeous day. 44 already and should get up to at least 52? A couple of days ago "they" said it should be about 54 as a high and it got up to 62 ! Go figure. Not a great time to be a weather man....LOL

It really is! I figured it was a safe bet. The tartan would not work today. ;) Too much wind at the wrong moments. You know how that can be.

We haven't had winter yet, oh! A day or three for the season, but, hello?? It is sort of like almost February! And I am still waiting for the old man to show up. Perhaps I misspoke! LOL Sun and shine can pick a better time some days. It is totally gorgeous out and I expect it to crawl up into the fifty-degree range today unless we lose out sunshine. Which isn't likely.

Being Camelot and all. My weatherman has been fired since 2017. Can't seem to get within 25 degrees of the weather. Makes dressing for the day like a rehearsal for the real thing. Layers. That is the idea. It works every time.

Well, God said hello. Just saying. ;) Oh! Do we get to go to Mom's for dinner today?

Yep... heading to Mom's in a few after I hit the grocery store to pick up a few things for her.

Old fashioned BBQ Chicken. I got lucky today, my brother is going out to do some stuff for her, computer, phone that sort of thing and you know how it is, if a son comes to see you, you have to cook ! Daughters coming out?... Good luck to you ! ahahahahahaha... today I will be fed well by default !

I don't care, I'll take it any way I can get it ! :)

I'm with you one that one! I don't care who feeds me, as long as they feed me and it isn't haggis! LOL

Oh, why do women feel the need to feed men? I'm sure we can trace it back to Adam and Eve somehow.

Doesn't it always?

Yep.... you may have something there.

Here honey ! Taste this apple. It's DELICIOUS !!

HA HA

You little evil serpent! I should have known with you running around with your hair on fire engine red Its a trap!!!

I'm telling you true!!

How about if I !tip you and you give the apple to the next bad best person?

Happy Robbie Burns Day Denise! Ah my wee lass looks like a great celebration.

I don’t think I could eat the haggis even with whiskey to chase it down. 😂

Love those kilts and the sound of the bagpipes. The marching and piping stirs my spirit.

Oh, lass! A girl after mine own heart! I love when a celebration has deep roots like this one does. No, No! You have it wrong! You drink the whiskey, then you bite the haggis. Blech! Either way, it doesn't taste much good, but, it is the spirit of it that counts, am I right? '

Plus, the dog underneath the table.

Oh, I do love me some kilts with a bagpipe or three in the background. Get in line! We'll be marching through town anytime now!

Haggis is gross. Let's be honest here. I could soak it in whiskey and still think it tastes like something the dog drug home. LOL

My weekend is going great! I cannot believe that it is almost February! Where is the time going to??? Warmed up a bit and where did our winter go to? We have had 3 days of cold. That is it!

Have a great night and thanks for the TRDO!

!tip

Ohh yeah it truly is gross for sure trying it but nice was more than enough lol
Ohh yeah Feb is only a couple of days away

Not saying Winter is over I don’t want to tempt fate but it has been a gentler winter than I was expecting
