Wednesday Walk through the Street of DC

in #wednesdaywalk5 years ago

Good morning from here!! Today is #WednesdayWalk hosted by the legendary @tattoodjay. If you aren't familiar with it, see his latest post here. I got some mostly unexpected weather so, I was not prepared to be so cold while walking through town! Yikes!! Bear with me while I find a pair of gloves to put on! I never wear them, so they are somewhere in the car! I am totally freezing cold!

I wanted to stop at the Smithsonian Castle, a beautiful Victorian red-sandstone building, which happens to be the oldest building standing on the National Mall in downtown Washington, DC. My cousin works there and I was hoping she would want a coffee break. I know she will! Anyway, as I was telling you... It is home to the Smithsonian Visitor Center and was actually designed by the same architect that did St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. This was the home of the first Secretary of the Smithsonian, Joseph Henry, and his family. He actually lived there and worked there. Who knew? A castle right in the middle of downtown Washington, DC. The first time I saw it, I thought that perhaps it was built as a spoof, but, it wasn't. It is a bona fide real deal.

)

I know! I always walk up Pennsylvania Avenue!! This is my favorite view here. If you walk from one end to the other it connects the White House and the United States Capitol. See map here

Not the prettiest picture of the Capitol Building. Winter is like that.

Did you know that the Capitol has its own private subway? It carries politicians from House and Senate to the Capitol and vice versa. That is why you don’t see them toiling among mere mortals on the streets. Did you know that the Capitol was built after Thomas Jefferson held a design competition? Did you know the name of the statue that graces the top of the Capitol is “Statue of Freedom’? Did you know that in 1899 a law was put into effect that restricted any building in the District to be taller than the Capitol? Yeah… it was repealed.

Did you know? Did you know?

That is the joy of history… there is always a good story behind it. — at The Capitol, Washington D.C.

I have so many favorite buildings, it is hard to choose just one. This ranks pretty high on the list. Built in 1899, the Old Post Office's clock tower offers one of the best (in my opinion) panoramic views of Washington, D.C. The tower houses the Congress Bells, which was a Bicentennial gift from England, commemorating friendship between the nations. Unfortunately, this building now houses a hotel, but, the Tower is still open to the public.

While beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, what makes a building beautiful to you? Graceful lines? Style, materials? What? What? What? — at Old Post Office Pavilion

This was actually near my first stop this morning. It was barely there. The morning, that is. Oh, Independence! It's a great thing to have, but there are times in life a little bit assistance goes a long way. Sometimes, the simplest way to help another person is to show them respect and compassion. Sometimes it is a little bit more. Jones New York skirt and blazer $17.95. Blouse $4.99 Hose $3.99 Heels $4.99 Purse $3.99 Kick butt toiletry kit for a shower date. Free from home. Outfitting a homeless person for a job interview - then hearing that they landed it: Priceless. Basic human dignity. How hard is that? — at the corner of Happy and Hopeful

A last stop before I go home...

The world changed forever. Yet, the legend lives on. A man may die, nations may rise and fall, but an idea lives on. President John F. Kennedy — at Kennedy's Eternal Flame At Arlington National Cemetery

What would the day be without the presence of a flower? Flowers. There must always be a flower.

I let myself be carried away
On the shoulders of desire
Crossing the line
Made in the sand
Playing my cards, one at a time
Until there are none and the day is done

Don't ever forget what a wonderful world we live in, people. Let's hold hands around the globe and make this earth really spin. Some days, it is not as easy to see, so we must try harder to give everyone the proper focus.

Later that night
I held an atlas in my lap
Ran my fingers across the whole world
And whispered,
"Where does it hurt?"
It answered,

"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"
"Everywhere"

This post gives me so many good memories. I was there a lot of vacations and work trips for the navy. I always left Friday and came back Sunday and the work would only be Tuesday to Thursday, so I had long weekends of touring. I took @bxlphabet out of school and we always had a blast. Lots of sore feet though.

We went to the old post office tower on one visit and were there for hours. That is my most highly recommended stop you have. Other than the help for the homeless lady - good for you Denise, @dswigle. You changed a life.

The Old Post Ofice has the best views of the city as far as I'm concerned (well, except up at Lee's house in Arlington Cemetery! Wow!) The homeless people are fewer than most big cities, but, it is the Veterans in the park north of the White House (commonly called Layfayette SQ or park) that have my heart. xoxo

I am happy you are home again, home again... jiggity jig!

That was it exactly. The comparison to the trip up into the Washington Monument was stunning. The post office is superior in every way.

San Diego's homeless is so bad now that is takes over your view everywhere. And of course - so many of them are veterans of these never-ending wars. So sad.

I'm glad too. The bed is calling me now!

Have a peaceful rest!

Goodnight!

What a great post. Living in California I am bummed that it is such a trip to see our capital. I haven’t made it yet but hope to soon. That you for the history I knew some of it but not all of it.

Posted using Partiko iOS

That's great to know even some of the history! People live their whole lives in places and know nothing about there.

So you are at least ahead of the game! Thanks for the visit!

Oh yes Princess, some of those would be great to see on Monochrome Monday! You remember Monochrome Monday, no? LOL

Yes there are many nice buildings to admire. Different town, but I always thought the Chrysler building was quite iconic. Also that one on the corner of Broad and Wall aint bad either!

Are you talking about Delmonico's? The amazing building that is skinny and on a corner or another? The Chrysler Building is probably my favorite building. Hands down.

Looking back at them, I suppose some of them would make good Monochromes, but, I was feeling prose-y at the moment. You know?

Thank you for stopping by, resteeming and the upvote!

OMG u Diva! Are you playing with me now OMG! You say you are basically half as much a New Yorker... WALL ST and Broad, pfft! You are such a funny Delmonico lol!

Yes, Old Man. I am playing with you. I am not basically half as much a New Yorker! I worked there. I am a Connecticutite!

Pure and simple. Here !! Take another tip!

Oh I am just playing around with you, Bestie :) Or maybe you are playing me, hmmm...

I always thought the NYSE was an iconic looking building, you know with the flag and all and the facade. You are just so funny!!!

You know I wouldn't give you that kind of satisfaction.Of course it is iconic looking, dear.

Eyeroll

Eyeroll?

You mean like this one, dear???

LOLZ!!!

I got that one from here!!! The good ole days! One of our first vid posts!

I will answer all your questions in the same way: I knew nothing. :)))) but I can be forgiven :)))) very interesting !!!! Thanks for your story. You are struck by the story of the subway. Sakes alive! tulips great !!!! the sun bathes in them !!! :) I hope you got your coffee and got warm!

Oh my gosh, you are so funny! I have to admit that if you asked me those kind of questions about your country, I would have to have the same answer! But, one of the reasons and I really do like steemit is because I learned so many new things about different places and different things. It's learning experience and a growing one at that!

Thank you for the tour of DC! It has been many years since I was there... the last few times I was in the area I bypassed the city because traffic was insane. I would love to visit again. My favourite scene was viewing the Jefferson Memorial through the cherry blossoms. I had a Polaroid camera at the time and those photos are now lost. Loved your post, and your photos are great as always! Voted & resteemed :-)

I appreciate the resteem and upvote! Thank you for coming along! The traffic can get a little hairy, one of the reasons I walk a lot or take mass transportation, much like everyone else that lives around here.

Thanks for the always encouraging words!

I pulled all my pictures off the computer and put them on an external hard drive (10 Terrabytes!) I haven't put them in order yet, so this is an older, less composed shot. :)

Yes, that's what I remember... it was April and the blossoms were wonderful :-)

I wonder if they will be ruined by the roller coaster temperatures we have this year?

What a walk! Boulevards and famous buildings ... I can say I've seen them in movies.
Kennedy's Eternal Flame At The Arlington National Cemetery is the most impressive! When JFK was assassinated, I was nine years old. I was shocked, for me JFK was a kind of hero, superman ...

Thank you so much, Dan! @bluemoon It is funny to see these buildings in movies and yes! Even now, when an anniversary comes up on November 22, it is cause for pause. I know that he was my grandparent's hero, they had a picture of him in their living room. At the time, he was already gone, but, I never thought it was odd. Now, I look back and wonder if their ideals were misplaced, not because I didn't think he was a good man, but, I also know he had flaws, just like everyone else.

In some ways, I think he was idealized because he was assassinated. Would he have been that revered if he hadn't been? I don't know. Maybe. Maybe not.

But, yes, even growing up, I thought of him as a hero, but, that is because of how the press showed him. Please don't think I dislike him, I was just thinking aloud.

I understand very well what you say and agree. Now we have access to much more information, the harder it is to know what is real information and not fake.
I make a confession ... in 1963, a 9-year-old boy from a very distant and very communist country fell in love with Caroline, the daughter of JFK (who probably was 6 years old).

Haha! :) She actually is a very nice and honorable woman now. You would be proud of who she became.

I'm sure of this. Platonic love, of course.

Of course!!

My pleasure!

SO much information so uch History and so much a joy to read, Love your Wednesday Walks :)
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk !tip

These are always fun to do! I need to find some different places to take my walk to make it more interesting! History is always so interesting to me. I like the little-known facts that some people leave you with when you get a private tour.

Best way to see the city!

!tip

I seldom do tours I like just heading out wher my Whims take me and see what I see, but you make a good point on a tour you would learn so many interesting little bits of information, its somehting i may have to reconsider

I have to be honest with you. Many times, I will take a tour after getting an overall look of a city. Then, I am equipped to know more about things when I have guests in town or if I revisit a city. One of the biggest reason I know so much about NYC and its history is some of the tours I took as a young person. I love wandering, but, I save that for the rest of my days!

In saying that, I just love your wanderings, but, mostly because I am familiar with a lot of what you show (or some of it anyway! ) :)

Actually, now that I think about it I have done a couple of tours in NYC, and learned a lot from them, I did them when I had visitors, friends and family to the city. and then for other visitors, I took them on my own tour LOL
Yes from your comments I think you are the one person that knows NYC as well as I do

See?? That is probably why you know so much about NYC! Plus, you are pretty nosy (adventurous) like I am, with the need to know!

Yes indeed, and plus when I had to wean myself away from going to the office on Weekends I set myself a challenge to go to every subway stop in the city :)

I have done that here!!!! The only one that made me look twice was the Chinatown. Before I knew how the city was laid out, I was like... Ummmm.... where am I?

You can even get a tour if you are ever going to be in town! They are made in advance but, they are so worth it!

Have a most wonderful day!
