3 Things I Like to Change on Steemit

This a response to the 30-day writing challenge by @dragosroua. Please join in. It does make you think about your experience on Steemit.

May 30 Days Writing Challenge - Day Seven: Name 3 Things That Must Be Done Immediately To Make Steemit.com A Better Experience

1 More Guidance to Newbies

Steemit is not an easy platform to engage on if you come from a non-tech background. I myself am a point in case. I had no idea what markdown is and have no coding experience whatsoever.

I did read the instructions available in the drop-down menu next to the profile picture. That helped a little - but some of the functions described there didn't work no matter how closely I followed the guide.

Then I discovered how to videos which were a bit more helpful since I do learn better by seeing how something is done, reading about it and then, implementing it.

The only problem was that many of the tricks and tips were outdated since the platform is constantly changing.

I brought people on board who are computer savvy and are even building websites - and I had to sit down with them and teach them what to do. Well, I was proud of myself for having (somewhat) figured out this platform, but my point is that many are scared and don't try again.

So, I would like to see simple how-to tutorials which are up to date and immediately accessible to a newcomer - links in the email that delivers the master key.

2 Clear Instructions on How to Use the Keys

I see way too many people getting hacked. It seems to be happening almost every day to someone in the many groups on discord. Even people who are on the platform for a while do not seem to understand how important it is to NOT use the master key unless a key change is necessary.

There is a welcoming message now asking to keep the master key safe, but I don't think it is enough. An email sequence going out to all newcomers with one step at a time instructions of the most important functions and filled with links to find more help on the platform might be a good idea. I am thinking of a 5 email welcoming sequence. Of course, with the privacy laws, people need to opt in to that when signing up.

3 Communities or Private Groups

Right now, the only interaction we can have with each other is via comments on a post. That is great, but it is not easy to reach more than one person that way. ChainBB was trying to address that with the forum function - I think - but it was so complicated that I never got the hang of it. And I tried. Since it is gone now I am assuming that I wasn't the only one who couldn't figure it out.

We need an easy way to send private messages and to interact as a community without having to go to a completely different server - which we are all doing now by using Discord.

I know that is in the making and am really looking forward to it. Also, in case you haven't read @dragosroua's post, I agree that the token should come later. Let's first figure out how that community function works before adding another layer. Also, having tokens as an incentive from the very beginning will invite scams and spam - I think.

Buiding strong communities first and then introducing the tokens seems like a good idea to me.

Solid points.

It's really tiring to have to go to discord to have a complete conversation with anyone, and that's if you're fortunate enough to share a server with them.

I hear you!!! Btw. Do you know that we are doing a big contest at the freewrite House? hope you can join!! It will be fun!!

I might be wrong, but I suppose that the fault that #3 would address (which I think most of us would agree with) is by design. Everything you do on Steemit, including interactions with others in the community, is supposed to be entirely visible to everyone who cares enough to look, because it's based on the philosophy of crypto and blockchain. I guess that has its strengths though it freaks me out to know that there's really zero privacy and I would gladly give that up for a more traditional approach to communication...

well, yes and no. I think the other platforms like discord will always have their place for just shooting the bull, but the groups here on steemit would be more topic based. At least that is what I think. so, for example the freewriters could have a group where people would see all the messages to a particular topic - or conversation threads which are now all over the place.
I think it would invite a different conversation.
And yes, whatever we put on here stays forever. But truth be told, everything you put anywhere can be found - even your most private email. That is the age we live in...

I got phished within my first month and lost a bunch of SBD (money I had transferred in) . I read what you wrote and then got inspired and started leaving comments for people on introduction posts about each password and how to use each one. Then I realized after like the 4th one that 1. I was now technically spamming them and might get in trouble by cheetah or something (although I see lots of actual spam on those posts) and 2. It is not very efficient for me to do it manually. But of course, if you allow one or two people to have permission to spam everyone with their password post, those people will - in my time knowing about humans- 100% use it to make themselves lots of money and get new followers. I wonder if there could be an account that just declined payout and whose only purpose was to post about passwords to new people. Of all of the things that it took me a while to figure out here none are as important as not getting hacked. That really put a damper on me.

I am so sad to hear that!! That is why I think there needs to be more of place to find out about these things. I try to put as much information as I can in the daily prompt post, but it gets very overwhelming.
Right now, it is pure luck if you get to "meet" someone who is helpful. I was lucky to come across the MAP project when I was very new and there were super helpful people in the discord. You could go there at any time of the day and someone was there, answering questions.
But that takes a toll on the people doing this. they end up not having time to post themselves and are loosing out on building their own accounts - not sustainable at all.

Steemit has been a challenge to learn for me as well. Oh lord, and then trying to decribe everything you have to do to a newbie is like speaking a different language! I guess thats why facebook is so popular, you dont have to code or really work to hard to do anything on that site. But, Steem has made it worth while! It’s definitely takes work, but I agree there needs to be easier and more accessible guidance for newbies. I’ve had to dig A LOT to find out how to do just simple stuff on this platform. Take care! @mariannewest

Me too!! It was such a learning experience and still is. I am still learning every day how to do things faster and better.
But we are still here :)
Thanks for stopping by!!

I agree with your three, but in my opinion, communities and groups takes a backseat to an option - which we should have had from the beginning - to keep our wallets PRIVATE.

For me this is a safety issue, and since we're intelligent adults here, I don't feel the need to go into great detail to explain why. Suffice it to say that heinous crimes are committed every day for a lot less money than even beginners have in their STEEM wallets.

Having the wallets public by default - with no way to make them private - is, to me, the #1 downside to Steemit as it stands today.

hmm. I don't know. the whole point of the blockchain is that is is a public ledger - that all transactions are visible to everyone. I guess privacy is provided by using a made-up name like you do. but I don't know enough about that. I know there is the vessel wallet - but I am pretty sure your transactions still show up.

Don't know...

two unrelated questions you may be able to answer 1. Is there an article that explains how to add 'stuff' to your posts... like the gifs and links ... or do you manually enter them each time 2. Is there a group on here that unites writers to help edit each other?

  1. Are you talking about a signature or something you want on every post? If yes, what I do, I format whatever it is either directly on the platform or in a something like hack.io or even google docs.
Then I save it in a document and copy and paste into my post.
  2. have you joined the Isle of Write on Discord? They have spaces where people drop their documents and ask for feedback and it would be a good place to start. we also have a freewriters room there and, if you like, I can add something to the prompt and write a post in the Freewrite House to see if we can form a feed back group. Also @ntowl teaches an English class on a different discord server Sunday evenings and she might be a good resource.

Let me know what you think - if you would like to get a freewriter group together to do this.

And enter in the 200-day celebration!! It will be fun!!

I cannot for the life of me find anything on discord that I wasn't added to. The search doesn't bring up Isle of write... or just any person I look for.

click on the invite in my signature... It will take you there
