What I Look For When Voting For Witnesses + (Steem Witness Spotlight)

in #witness6 years ago (edited)

THIS IS NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE; THIS IS MY JOURNEY. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MONEY.
Watch at 1.25x speed for a better viewing pleasure!

Going to highlight one Steem Witness every show.

Today's spotlight: @Guiltyparties - Back when that 11k Steem was stolen from me, and a villain had gained access to my account powering down the rest of the SP I had, Guilty stepped up and went over and beyond to help me. Learn more about Guiltyparties here: https://guiltyparties.com/d.

What I look for in witnesses I vote:

  1. Reliability
  2. Value-added
  3. Skin in game/ eat own dog food
  1. Not just in servers run but in community support.
  2. How hungry are you to add value to Steemit?
  3. How often do you use Steem and how much Steem do you have? (in portion to your investments)
  • For backup witnesses, are you cruising by or adding more value then you are currently getting paid for? - I like to see initiative, leadership and the desire to do more than required.

As users of the platform, we should care about witnesses; only 40% of EOS hodlers voted, people invest a little everywhere and don't care.

You don't need SteemPower to make a difference, create content about witnesses - @taskmaster4450
Call out witnesses, hodl them accountable, shine the light on overachievers

Old quote - Apple tree, food out of reach, give up and die?

I'm going to kill it here:
When you buy a coin, it dips low you buy more, the cost of knowing it is an excellent project; to learn a project while at the bottom is magical, to see it before everyone else.

  • Shout out to @fulltimegeek for giving me the idea of doing a video about Steem Witnesses and why I vote for whom. Also, shout out to @taskmaster4450 for giving me the spotlight idea.

Cheers, Peace.

Man I have no words. I found this post an hour ago and been sitting here just dumbfounded. I'm real grateful for your words and more so, knowing that me being around to get your account freed now has sparked this butterfly effect, makes all the time here worthwhile.

I had a similar list in an earlier post, citing witness objectives. C/P: There are a few universal objectives all witnesses should have in common.
-Reliability of the STEEM blockchain
-Longevity of the STEEM blockchain
-Utility of the STEEM blockchain
-Competitiveness of the STEEM blockchain

I don't want to ham it up but I do give a shit and I try to stay positive that others do too. I'd recommend all of the witnesses who replied in the comments here so far: @emrebeyler, @pjau, @therealwolf, @c0ff33a. All are busting their balls making a contribution.

I'd recommend all of the witnesses who replied in the comments here so far: @emrebeyler, @pjau, @therealwolf, @c0ff33a.

What are they doing that's so special? [serious question]

I'm going to reply strictly from the top of my head because the deeds of a witness should be known without having to be looked up (I didn't read the replies here before typing this up). This is an incomplete list of achievements for that reason.

Here goes nothing: @emrebeyler built Dpoll, a way to add polling to steem. He's also got a lot of python contributions, the exact name of his repository escapes me but you can pull it up easy. @pjau built the steemcleaners blacklist api, spends a ton of time catching phishing and plagiarism, and works with the steemcleaners. He also built a guessing game. @therealwolf made Smartsteem and with it introduced a whitelist model to the community (I believe that's over now). He's also an active contributor on github and was instrumental resolving the post-hf situation with his cli tools/assistance. @c0ff33a is the partner of @derangedvisions, the both of them organizing quality engagement opportunities for new users while contributing to a whole list of projects.

Hell yea! F youtube! Let's get everyone on DTUBE! I just started and yes, DTube is a pain in the butt... BUT I'm here for the cause and I believe it'll get better. Youtube is nothing without it's viewers, let's all take responsibility for this movement and start creating on DTUBE. The time is now!

Hey @theycallmedan, we started our blog the other day all because of the motivation you gave us. Keep on keeping on man, people listening! Thanks again!

He is worth following, not just for the motivation but also for knowledge and experience!

I was lucky to be able listening his advice!

By the way I’m also have some ICX

True i've been following him almost from the beginning of his yt channel, a gold mine that every crypto investor or trader should watch. :)

Since we’re relatively new to steemit is there anyone else you recommend following? Hodl that ICX :)

@reseller @bchainbastards @taskmaster4450 @stackin and @nathanmars to name a few I follow. I also like to follow all the witnesses I can because they provide breaking news for the Steem blockchain.

Hey guys! Excited you'll be making content, it's amazing how much easier it gets after you've started

Thank you @bchainbastards, we are loving it already. Trying to learn one new thing a day about steemit!

Great strategy! I'm here if you need help :)

You’re asking good question.

I would love to answer your question. First can you tell me why your SP is so low and secondly how about a dtube video introduction?

I’m sorry to ask this kind of questions because I’m coming across so many bot comments lately. I don’t know you’re one of the bot

Thanks for replying, The reason our SP is so low is because we just opened an account just to watch videos. Now that we are blogging we haven't changed anything yet. So would you recommend adding SP over everything else? I'll start adding that stuff once I understand it a bit more. I'll start focusing on that for now... Thanks again for taking the time to answer these!

Hey Dan, sorry to reach out to you like this, but I'm feeling a bit crazy for 2 am....

I have a radio show on mspwaves - it streams on twitch and to the palnet discord server (20k users) at the moment. I would love to have you stop by and maybe have a conversation with me regarding your way of thinking.

I resonate quite a bit with what you say, and honestly, I think a lot of people would benefit from a mindset of longterm positivism.

I'm meno#5416 on discord, and you can always find me on https://discord.gg/kNxM7T6 Palnet...

Hopefully we can make this happen... cheers mate

Sure, thanks for the invite! I will reach out later tonight on discord. cheers

These are exactly the sort of questions I think anyone with any investment into Steem should ask themselves - and then actually go and vote for some Witnesses based on what they have found.

I think it reflects very favourably on Steem that we have so many active Witnesses, it shows how many people are committed to moving it forward and each one brings something unique to contribute.

And thank you very much for voting my own Witness, myself and @derangedvisions really appreciate every vote we get - it helps us continue to support various communities.

Over 14 thousand witnesses, I am still amazed TBH.
I will check out derangedvisions.

You're certainly right about price, as the price has fallen from $6 people start to run away, the people who truly believe and have stayed this whole time have just been building their Steem earnings up. The moment it goes back up those people will flood back, but will have missed out on earning this whole time. Personally I don't even look at the price, it's irrelevant to me as I am here for the long run. The potential is huge, the whole market is down, but it's tiny in comparison to what it will be in the future.

As for running a witness, I am definitely not cruising by financially. Haha, 5 months and I haven't earnt a penny from it. 😂But it doesn't bother me, I like running it and I believe in Steem. So it's all good 😁

@guiltyparties is a great guy and definitely needs to be ranked higher. I have worked with him since the start of this year with the @steemcleaners and he is a great hard working guy. So everybody vote for him now! 😊

↑ It's true, he earns nothing from witnessing despite working full-time on Steem.

Every witness @guiltyparties has recommended me to check out have all been overall exceptional and you are right at the top of the list @pjau

Thanks for the support, @theycallmedan. And you bring up some great points about witness voting. These posts about witness voting help bring more awareness to both a) the importance of voting; and b) making informed decisions of who you're voting for. :)

Loving all the video's Dan - I've watched some on my PC - and others I have played through the car stereo on a commute. You have some epic quotes - they are great to listen to. Feeling inspired with the building in the bear market and hodling through the turbulence! I look forward to watching many more of these. I've listened carefully to the support you have received from @guiltyparties at a stressful time - he has just received my 18th witness vote.....twelve to go.....

Great thoughts.

I wish every stakeholder, reviews their witness votes in periodic intervals and check who they vote for with a small set of questions like these.

Also, @guiltyparties rocks in many ways. 🤘

Lately, I am thinking a lot about "votes decay" feature. What if users could decide for how long they can give a vote? Giving a vote for perpetuity by default... sounds very unreasonable for a lot of people.

For example... if I trust one witness and I know him a lot, I could give him vote for 6 months. After that time I would knew that I should re-evaluate his work.

If I will find another new, but very promising witness, which in my eyes didn't prove his dedication (because he didn't have time)... I could give him an upvote for a month... and after that I would check how he is doing.

IMO they key would be to not set a default value, after which vote is cancel. User should be able to decide that.

This is true, also is someone goes to prison or dies, without a decay their votes would be locked for all eternity. Good points @noisy

Currently I try to check what is general impression of people for this proposal. It would change status quo, so it is potentially dengrous to bring such topic up :D

I'm all in on steem and I have confidence in this system going forward. This was a very enlightening video.
